Re: Little things that irritate you
My wife's family, who decamped to Africa and Asia some years ago, giving us (her) heat over summer and winter holiday arrangements. FFS, if you want to make a big deal about how hard it is to see each other, perhaps not f*cking off to other continents would be a start?

People who don't open the milk properly, and leave the foil half on so that when you pour, the milk comes out the side like some sort of weird white waterfall, and completely misses your cup.

Re: Little things that irritate you
Realising that it's getting harder to read, as you reach that age when you really need to start wearing reading glasses. And then forgetting to always have them with you. Those are gripes, in themselves.
No, this is about those HEAVILY advertised, floor & table lamps/lights that really appeal because you know how much it would help said affliction, only to find out that they cost a quite ridiculous, arm & a leg..
I suppose at least they put the prices in their brochure now, they didn't used to, which kind of, should have been, a pre-warning about the steep price...

On glasses, my minces are going with age, I am getting repetitive strain injury in my right elbow on moving my glasses to top of head to my snout depending on what I am trying to read, varifocals on order...

Lights to help you read? By making it less dark? Don't they all do that....Samba wrote: No, this is about those HEAVILY advertised, floor & table lamps/lights that really appeal because you know how much it would help said affliction, only to find out that they cost a quite ridiculous, arm & a leg..

HMRC and banks
Trying to pay my father-in-law's self assessment bill, he has dementia so is no longer capable of these things. We went on the HMRC website to pay by card, failed because apparently "The address does not match that held by your bank", we tried a few variations of address just in case it was a formatting issue then decided bugger it I'll go down the post office and pay it. Then my wife received a text warning that his account was overdrawn. Checking the account online it tells us that there are several thousand pounds in the account but the usable balance is £200 overdrawn, but there are no pending transactions. We phone his bank, their explanation is that HMRC "reserve" money, give the bank a reference number then request the money at a later date using the reference - so the money is frozen and not shown as pending. There are two transactions for the same amount, with two different references. The bank can't cancel, HMRC have to tell them they do not want one. So we phone HMRC and get passed from pillar to post, they deny my wife has power of attorney (not true and they have had a copy) they then tell us we have his address wrong - despite the fact they write to him at this address - basically the person from "payments" is rude and hangs up. We eventually speak to someone who is at least sympathetic but they can't help and insist it is for the bank to cancel. They refuse to acknowledge that it is HMRC at fault as it is their system that said the payment had failed repeatedly, when in fact it worked twice. So we have to wait for the payments to go through then request repayment of one of them.
I don't normally have an issue paying my tax bill, but there again I generally do it by direct bank transfer not using their dated website.

Re: Little things that irritate you
HMRC are a bunch of c**** full stop.
Bastards sent me some serious threats about not returning my forms, when I informed them that I had sent them fully recorded and had the name and department of the signee , I was told yet again that they had not received them
My next statement was 'So I have proof of receipt, So you are therefore telling me you have lost my personal information and data'
They went quiet after that

Re: Little things that irritate you
Last Sunday night upon going to bed I realised that my ventolin inhaler was empty - I started to panic [ mildly ] - looked downstairs to see if I had another one somewhere but no I only had the one and it was empty . I took a couple of puffs of clenil modulite [ the preventer ] and was ok until morning . Usually I wake up 2 or 3 times needing my inhaler but for some reason I was ok .
Now , since moving to Elgin for 9 months we've had to change our Doctors - I sort of realised I wasn't going to get the same service as I received on Skye , there's more people living here etc it was never going to be as personal as back home - On Skye we were friends with 3 of our Doctors , unusual I know but there you go .
Another problem we had was our car was in the garage , we needed an exhaust system , 2 new winter tyres and there was something wrong with the brakes , the back plate had rusted and we needed a new one and the part had to come from Germany [ 5-7 days ] -
So , I phoned up the receptionist who tells me I'm going to have to come in and hand in my prescription list then come back at 5pm to collect it .
' But I need an inhaler now , I have asthma , no car , can't you accept the request over the phone '
' Sorry , no '
I tried another angle then another , to no avail .
' I'd like to make a complaint '
' OK , 2 seconds '
I'm put through to the Practice Manager who tells me the exact same thing as the Receptionist .
' I have no car , I have asthma and to do what you're telling me to do will cost me £40 in taxi fares ' .
' Sorry , that's our protocol '
' In that case I'd like to see a Doctor please '
' Do you have asthma now '
' Yes , it's why I'm phoning you '
' I'll arrange for someone to phone you back '
Ten minutes lates the Practice Nurse phones me , she could not have been sweeter , completely understood how silly it was for me to have to pay for 4 taxis and wrote out a presciption for me there and then .
Persistence . That's what you need .

Sorry to hear about your issue TOMOS.
My irritation is hearing about the ignorant morons who want to use the ambulance service like they are a taxi firm....

Re: Little things that irritate you
Back on Skye I phone in our presciptions , either by an automated answering machine or straight through to the Receptionist , we all know each other by our first names and we generally have a laugh together . You wait 3 days and you collect the presciptions from the Surgery - it's brilliant .AlfieG wrote:Sorry to hear about your issue TOMOS.

If we have a problem out of hours there's our local hospital , you can turn up there at any time of day and the Doctor will see you - it's brilliant . I guess we're spoilt and we've got used to being treated well .
Here in Elgin they do things differently - it's not so brilliant .
But I had explained to them I had no car and that it would have cost me £40 minimum , some taxis would have charged £48 - all they had to do was order one prescription for me - people die from asthma attacks and they were willing to take that risk with me - I realise they were following protocol but you would think that just now and again they would show a little humanity depending on the circumstances .
It's the only thing about living here I do not like .
Alfie - I agree completely , that and the attacks on paramedics , nurses and receptionists is unforgivable .

I do mine online with the Chemist I will pick up from. 2 days later it's ready for me to collect and I don't see a doctor at all (though I do have a check up every 6 months)The Old Man of Storr wrote:
