Nice one GCRO - will use that as leverage. The boiler he's quoted for is around £700 - add on a couple of new actuators and replacement CH pump, and we can't be looking at more than £1k for parts. £1500 for labour with 20% VAT seems pretty expensive, given we're looking at a day or two (tops) to do the work (his numbers, not mine).

Indeed, saw 'Now serving our 2017 Christmas menu' banner this week as passing a chain on the way to work.somerset-hammer wrote:A chain pub near me, with christmas decorations up outside, already!

Picking up a copy of the Metro or ES and one of the staples is missing, meaning that with every turn of the page it's battle to stop it ripping and falling everywhere on the train.

That price does seem a bit excessive for what you want but I'm a bit out of touch with prices now that I no longer own my own house.DasNutNock wrote:Nice one GCRO - will use that as leverage. I think the BG offer also includes service etc. at half price too. The price you are quoted is the price you pay, regardless of any work done. You need to get someone round to do a quote, if you don't like what they're saying just tell them to do one.

Literally, my production assistant when we made a fitness program with her in the early 1990's, she "bumped" the arse of him for a couple of months after as well. Total shock in the office, this guy was in no way attractive, or wealthy, think fatish nerdy type with glasses, we felt it was her form a sympathy/pity shag. Or he was sorting her some gear and her pants fell off when she was on it. Either way he was one lucky little ****er.RichieRiv wrote:In fairness where is / was Jerry Hall likely to bump into a 9-5'er on minimum wage?

Either that or she was gagging for a shag and he was the first available cock to wander her way.

He's already brought his quote down from £3k to £2100, we'll see if he can do any better. If not, I'm going elsewhere...Tenbury wrote:Re fitting a boiler. Try a wider search radius for companies.
We have a lot of clients from London, as our rates are much lower. Know a lot of local tradesmen and companies that take on work round that way, make good money and are still a fair bit cheaper than the locals, despite the distance.

If he's dropped £900 off just like that, how else is he shafting you over?DasNutNock wrote:

Also £600 off the kitchen fit. So, went from £9.6k to £8.1k in one phone call. I reckon there's more wiggle room there, and if there's not, he's probably priced himself out of the job. Fair enough, I know he's got a business to run and I don't expect him to do it for free - but just because I live in Weybridge, doesn't mean I'm a billionaire with cash to burn.sendô wrote:If he's dropped £900 off just like that, how else is he shafting you over?

You're paying 8 large for a kitchen?? f*** me!
I fitted my own, complete with a range cooker and a hand made island unit with Brazilian granite worktops for less than 2.5k.
I thought that was expensive!

Re: Little things that irritate you
No, total cost is looking closer to £19k, which is making me extremely uneasy. I lack the ability to re-tile the floor without ballsing it up, and I can't do plastering, but I'm unconvinced I should be paying someone to screw the pre-made cabinets to each other. If this was the second major build job I'd done, I'd be up for doing it myself, but as ever, it'd be a first time effort, and I can't risk f*cking anything up. I want to move in 4 years and there's a minimum standard of fit & finish I need to comply with if I want to sell at the top end price.
£2.5k is very impressive, though, and I have no idea how you did that. The counter surfaces alone cost that much on our build (6.5m quartz or something).

I'd walk away and get some other quotes at least. That seems extortionate, unless it's been fitted by naked supermodels with an acute sex addiction.

Re: Little things that irritate you
- 8600 for the cheaper cabinets, sink & tap, counter (and fitting), and new appliances (excl washer & drier, which are both new) - 10300 if we get the slightly nicer cabs
- 2100 for fitting the new boiler, ch controls, wireless thermostat, ch pump, actuators, valves & flush
- 6k for fitting the kitchen, plastering, replacing floor tiles (18m2), new lights, new radiator, electrics, plumbing
I still don't understand why people look at me, in my £3 t-shirt and my 9 year old shoes, in our house full of broken old second-hand furniture, and they think "Yeah, he looks like someone with plenty of money I can take".

Re: Little things that irritate you
We were quoted between £80k and £110k for a side return extension & kitchen refit that would add roughly 9m2 to the building and included a shared party wall with the neighbours who were also after the same work.sendô wrote:You could almost build an extension for that.
