Re: Little things that irritate you
Having to use the American spelling of aluminium when submitting a scientific paper is actually making me feel queasy. There's an "i" in it
It just looks wrong

I can get on-board with sticking "z" in every other word but it's the sodding title that I'm having to misspell.

My observation after watching at least 20 times was that she started out looking quite cute but her mouth got bigger every time until I thought she was going to swallow the whole universe.
So (D).

When the Circle Line was first created it was run by separately by the Met and the District companies. One ran service clockwise, the other anti-clockwise. Ticketing was completely separate with tickets on valid on respective services. Quite often the ticket sellers would not inform passengers that it would cheaper and quicker to travel on the rival service and sent passengers all the way round the other way. Hence why in 1933 both companies were amalgamated.sendô wrote:Apparently the Circle Line isn't even a line, but is 3 lines joined together.
When you look at the early history of the London Underground you realise what a dysfunctional lot they all were.

People that natter on the tube first thing in the morning.
Seriously, what is wrong with these people? Is there an army of middle aged women riding the tube after spending a night on the gear?

Re: Little things that irritate you
'ize' endings are correct British English. The use of ‘-ize’ spellings is part of the house style at Oxford University Press and the Times Literary Supplement, and they are as British as you get.Slacking student wrote:I can get on-board with sticking "z" in every other word but it's the sodding title that I'm having to misspell.
Americans only use 'ize', but that doesn't mean that if I write civilization or criminalize I'm using US English. Here's a quote from Hard Times by Charles Dickens:
"The scene was a plain, bare, monotonous vault of a school-room, and the speaker's square forefinger emphasized his observations by underscoring every sentence with a line on the schoolmaster's sleeve."

^ There was a thing in the paper the other day about schools and expulsions and how some are not correctly implementing them. I wish I'd read it now.

There's an important life lesson to be learnt there for him - that the people with the money and power always know better than those with the intelligence and ability.

Re: Little things that irritate you
A guy who works for me constantly pleading poverty, always on the beg from his family and friends, yet he has the top sky package, expensive mobile phone contracts for him and his family, and buys everything on finance.
Surely if you're struggling financially, these things especially Sky would be the first thing to go.
I struggle to have any sympathy for him, especially as he's never willing to put in any overtime.
