One for the cyclists:

Cycling down a tight city street, cars parked each side and some impatient twat sitting on your shoulder in his boy-racer revving and pressuring you. Gap comes and he roars round you belching smoke and throwing you a mean look. Then at the very next red light you pull up alongside him and smile as you manoeuvre in front of him again.

So true. Call it Zen or spiritual or whatever but it is an amazing feeling. Not just the actual physical sensation of sliding down a wall of water and hurtling towards the beach, but just being out there in the sun, the feel of the water, the shapes of the waves, the hiss of the foam and the colours of the coast...this is the hard bit to describe to the non-surfer.

I'm a latecomer to this and still a beginner, given my clumsiness, lack of balance or grace and slightly chunky build I consider it one of my greatest achievements learning how to catch one. And it makes me smile everytime.

Waking up really early and realising you've got hours left in bed.

Getting into the inside lane on the roundabout to avoid the long line of traffic and having the lights change just as you reach the front, allowing you to cut inside without cutting anyone up or having to use the brake.

When you get a "green wave" on your drive into work, and you beat your all-time commuting economy record by 2 mpg.

I do this too on regular journies. I did 55.4MPG from basildon to Gillingham the other day. Traffic was excellent, bridge was clear, no car in front at the tolls, gate went up for my dart-tag before the car was at a total stand-still. The whole journey, the car never stopped once. Very satisfying.

However, never beat the 58.3MPG coming back from Loughton a couple of months ago, another one where I wasn't stationary once, though that was quite late in the evening.

I will be over the moon if I get to 60MPG

My PB is 64mpg (cool summer's morning) into work around 6am. Think my PB coming home's more like 56, but I do that at rush hour.

Average year round there & back is more like 51mpg.

I LOVE having that read out on my car. Makes me SO much more aware of the traffic and environment, and makes me think much further ahead than I ever bothered to in the past.

It's certainly made me think more about my driving style having my little battle against the read-out. Quite a useful thing to have.
Shame the mrs can't seem to keep it much above 40MPG though. All my good work gets undone as soon as she gets behind the wheel

All of these, especially the first two.

Going to visit my neice and seeing her 10 month old daughter's face light up when she sees me and hold her arms out to be picked up.

Coupled with knowing that same said colleague, unbeknown to them, is in for a major bo**ocking and you watch him get called into the bosses office later that day to receive and seeing the look on his face when he comes out and sits back at his desk quietly for the rest of the day :D

My old man this morning, he hasn't got that much spare cash and I popped him round some shopping as he is struggling a bit with his prostate cancer (op on Monday) gave me 100 sheets in fivers, bless him, I obviously didn't want it but he wants me to have it for Christmas to treat myself, he has obviously been saving the fivers for some time, made me smile, he has never been an affectionate dad, a good dad, but not an affectionate one, little things eh.

Realising you really fancy a cup of tea, glancing to your side and realising that you already have one, then realising you've still got a good couple of hot glugs in there.

For the opposite, picking up your mug to take a glug of the tea you're enjoying, only to realise it's empty and all you get is either an ice-cold droplet or the cold feel of your breath from the mug. Gay.
