What is the appeal of ultra-strong chilli sauce?

Most days as I cycle home from work I go past a van heavily advertised in favour of something called Dr Burnorium's Psycho Juice, their tagline being "Hallowed be thy pain". It appears to be a range of chilli sauces specifically designed to destroy the inner lining of your mouth.

Is this just a form of masochism, or is there anything to be gained flavour-wise from something so strong that you wouldn't get from any other chilli sauce?

It's so you can't taste the minging meat that you're eating..

or that was the original use if I am not mistaken.

The meat was virtually rotten. So the hot sauce killed the awful taste while probably also killing any bacteria on the meat itself !!!!!!!!!!

I think it is just a form of bravado, aimed at young impressionable people - how do I know that? I was probably one at times when I was younger - if we went out for a curry, I’d always go for the hottest one, bravado fuelled by a few pints. Nowadays, I don’t mind something spicy but tend to steer away from Phaals and the like - and actually taste food rather than blast my tastebuds.

I think you've both hit the nail on the wotsit, Pablo & Cuenca.
Once your mouth is on fire, there's no chance of actually tasting anything, so it is pretty pointless.

Just watching the swimming championship on telly and Adam Peaty setting another record for something or other and there was this red line traveling down the pool showing the world record. Why didn't the other swimmers just hold on to that red line? Would have saved a lot of time and effort.

I've thought the same for many a year. I love my curries and chilie con carnies, but there's a point when they're just too much. Where curries are concerned, I love a thick sauce that's full of spice and flavour, not something that's going to take the lining of my mouth out and then taste nothing for hours after!

I'd say my absolute limit is the holy f**k sauce that the Rib Man supplies with his pulled pork burgers; but then not too much.

Why do wasps, bees, flies and so on spend hours head butting all the closed windows in the conservatory while completely ignoring the open doors?

Why are the numbers on a keypad on a telephone the opposite way around to the keypad on a keyboard?

Had to check that, I have never noticed that before. I am now intrigued and want to know the answer too.

That's a good one, I've never noticed that either. I suspect the answer won't be as interesting as the question....

A keyboard is a mock up of a calculator and, at a guess, the individual keys on a phone are configured in the same order as an old-fashioned dial, but as if they were on a page. So, start at top left...

Yes, it's a guess

Where does the sky begin?

Was thinking about this humming bubbles and got to the bit '...nearly reach the sky'. How far do bubbles have to go to actually reach the sky?

The sky is just outer space as we see it through the earth's atmosphere.

Technically, isn't it estimated at something like 14bn light years?

So (14 x 10^9) x (5.9 x 10^12) = 8.26 x 10^26.

Or 826,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 miles.

I'm sure someone will check my maths and tell me it's wrong.

at night.
during the day, we pretty much just see our own atmosphere, with only a few notable exceptions shining through it: the sun, the moon, venus and at times some comets and supernovae.

sendô wrote:Technically, isn't it estimated at something like 14bn light years?

about three times that (the edge of the observable Universe)

only by four orders of magnitudes :D
