What does the phrase "hold my beer" mean (apart from the obvious)?

Translates as "watch me attempt to out-do whatever it is you just did".

Flashing your main beams at traffic lights, when they were on red, to make them change.. has it actually ever worked?

Yes, frequently. And when they don't change, I assume it's a malfunction, and drive through anyway.

You know where they scratch a bit of the tarmac 2mm from the kerb but feel the need to cone off a whole lane and set up stupid traffic lights to control the traffic when no one is working there? It sometimes works on them ones if they're in the middle of no where..........

Is it really illegal to kill and eat a swan because they all belong to the Queen, or is that just a myth?

And on a related note, would it also be illegal to cook and eat a swan's egg if you got one in a suitable unfertilised state?

Not that I'm planning a late night trip to the local lake or anything.....

Don't think she "owns" them but it was treasonous (!) to kill and eat a swan until late 90's, Swans are protected as wild birds under the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside Act and under this law it is still illegal to keep or kill them.

My dad ate a swan some time in the 60s. He went to posh school, see, and that's the sort of sh*t they did back then. Actually they probably still do that now.

Anyway, he said it was a bit like duck crossed with turkey. Greasy and tough. He did like the gravy, though, as it had been made with an ounce of black hash.

Why do bookmakers stop taking bets on events that are almost certain to happen (e.g. a team is 10 points ahead in the league with 4 games to go)?

Surely that's the best time to make money from gullible idiots.

No, as I understand it bookies make the most money from long odds winners and lose more money for short odds, nailed on bets.

So for instance when someone like Leicester wins the league and there's one bloke who's won £50k off of a £10 bet, the bookies tend to do better because very few people will have bet and won on Leicester, whereas if Man City win the league at say 6/4, hundred if not thousands of people would have had a £10 bet on that, and so it costs them more overall.

Therefore if a team is 10 points clear with 4 games to go, even if they're offering 100/1 on, there'll be experienced gamblers that will weigh in £10k knowing they can make an easy, nailed on £100.

You'd be surprised, but plenty of people do those sorts of bets.

I understand your logic though, because I'm the sort of mug that'd stick a tenner on the 2nd place team at 200/1.

I take it you mean over 72mph for long sections of your journey? Surely an average speed camera is exactly that and not something that detects you going over the limit for a few yards?

This b*llocks is doing the rounds on whatsapp.

The same thing was circulated a few months ago.

It's bobbins. For a start the regulations do not permit nicking people for 2mph, or 0.28% over the speed limit - that doesn't even allow for margin of error on your speedometer.

I still think these make driving more dangerous.
Unless you're using cruise control (& that is not always as safe as you might think), you're almost certainly looking at your speedo at least 50% of the time as opposed to the road in front, behind or to the side of you.
Still, it rakes it a lot of money... :thdn:
