If your knee pops when you're riding a bike, it is a sign of two possible conditions. One is an overuse syndrome caused by the repetitive load you place on the knee with every pedal stroke -- the constant pounding can cause the kneecap to come off its track. The other possible cause of knee popping is a ligament tear or rupture. Doesn't sound like the latter for you, ph.
Overuse Syndrome
The overuse syndrome that makes the knee pop or click when it flexes is patellofemoral pain syndrome. This is when the patella, or knee cap, no longer tracks properly on the groove in the femur, the bone in your thigh. As a result, each time you flex your knee while cycling, you force your knee cap to rub against the underside of the patella, thus creating the popping or clicking sound.
Patellofemoral Pain
While your kneecap might be misaligned and causing a pop or click as you roll along, it might not cause any pain. However, the longer you leave the condition untreated, the more likely it is that pain will result. The pain may occur gradually and feel like it is coming from behind or around the knee cap. If you leave it untreated, the condition can lead to chondromalacia, the break down of the cartilage beneath your kneecap.
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome Treatment
Treatment for patellofemoral pain syndrome depends on the advancement of the condition. If you suffer from knee pain, rest the knee and ice it for relief. If the pain subsides, you can begin a physical therapy regimen to strengthen and stretch the muscles that support the knee. The main focus of therapy will likely be the quadriceps in the front of your thigh, which stabilize the knee cap and allow you to straighten your leg. Therapists might also focus on the hamstrings in the back of your thigh, which allow your leg to bend.

Re: Things you've always wanted to know......
This happened to me about 15 years ago.prince_huggy wrote:Not something I've always wondered because it's only just started happening to me but why, when I start riding my bike now, my knee always clicks. Is it just old age settling in?
Every time I knelt, I used to get a click whenever I stood up. Went to the Doctors and they sent me for an X-Ray and it turned out my knee was arthritic.
Bit of physio and all was good (though still painful at times)

Condensation forms when moisture in warm air lands on a cold surface.Tin Hat wrote:While driving, why does the inside of the car, especially the windscreen, steam up as soon as it starts raining?

Its also to do with the fact that when its raining the air is fully saturated with water vapour. Therefore only a slight change in temperature will cause condensation to form. When its hot and dry the air may be only 10% saturated and you will hardly ever see condensation under those circumstances.jastons wrote:Condensation forms when moisture in warm air lands on a cold surface.

Where did the expression when feeling poorly "I'm feeling under the weather" come from.
You don't say I'm feeling above the weather when feeling good.

DL - one for you. Is it 3 license points, if you don't let a bus pull out (if it starts indicating right before you begin to pass it)?

I don't know, but I can only assume we produce the majority of the plastic in the pacific ocean given the way BBC Breakfast was lecturing me this morning.westham, eggyandchips wrote:What % of the worlds waste is produced by the UK?
Apparently plastic balloons are going to be next.

It's a naval saying apparently. Was used to refer to seasickness.ageing hammer wrote:Where did the expression when feeling poorly "I'm feeling under the weather" come from.

The pop up adverts while I am on here are now advertising all gay cruises, should I be concerned.
