Interesting. Cheers Warp.warp wrote: that was mostly said about insects, which have a less efficient respiratory system and would then suffer more from oxygen levels dropping.
however it is noted that today's insect aren't limited to their size by oxygen, they could technically be bigger with current oxygen rates.
maybe evolution is trending towards more compact life forms, or this is just a temporary anomaly of the epoch we're living in: the vast majority of animals ever existed is extinct, so comparing today's animals to all the extinct ones is a bit unbalanced.

Leaf blowers - what's the point? As far as I can see, the only thing they do is make council workers look busy without actually achieving any productive outcome.

We have one. They are really useful. As long as the leaves are bone dry, there are no more than 4 of them and you don't care whereabouts they actually end up. Best £80 I ever spent.southbrishammer wrote:Leaf blowers - what's the point? Re: Things you've always wanted to know......
Why is it that, in this age of credit cards, debit cards, contactless payment, online shopping, BACS transfers, Paypal, bank transfers, instant payments via banking apps, pingit and so on plus any other number of payment methods that are straightforward and instant, that I still have to wait 3 to 5 working days for a cheque to clear at the bank?

That will change shortly Sendo. Most banks currently have large cheque clearing programmes running which will see cheques clear a lot quicker than they do now. You'll also be able to take a picture of a cheque and cash it in using your phone rather than visiting a branch. Watch this space.

Can't see cheques being around for much longer. I know they haven't disappeared at the rates at which the banks would like, but usage is on a downward spiral.

Basically cost. Sky would need to update their broadcast equipment to transmit more channels in HD.westham, eggyandchips wrote:Why are Sky's +1 channels never in HD?

I used to get through a cheque book about every 6 weeks. I've had my current one for over 8 years, and it's still half-fullwoodgreenspur wrote:Can't remember the last time i wrote a cheque.

The scoring system in tennis. Love, 15, 30, 40, deuce, advantage...
What's all that about?

Re: Things you've always wanted to know......
Interesting question sends and one I'd always wondered about, so cheers for making me get off my arsevand find out - this is what tinterweb told me;-
Tennis scores were shown in the middle ages on two clock faces which went from 0 to 60. On each score the pointer moved round a quarter from 0 to 15, 30, 45 and a win on 60. Somehow the forty five got truncated to forty when the clock faces dropped out of use - apparently 45 took too long to say in French *. Zero was shown as an oval - an egg shape - 'l'oeuf' in French, giving us 'love' for no points. 'Tennis' probably derives from French 'Tenez!'**The first winner of a tennis match was Carlos Tenez***
* 45 in French is 'quarante-cinq' as opposed to 40 - 'quarante' ..... blimey, they must have been pushed for time if those nano seconds made a difference!!!
* * 'Tenez' - is used when you give someone something, as in "Here you are" .... maybe referring to the act of hitting the ball to someone.
*** This is probably a lie made up by me.

That would most likely be why you "serve" in tennispablo jaye wrote:* * 'Tenez' - is used when you give someone something, as in "Here you are" .... maybe referring to the act of hitting the ball to someone.

During the last vestiges of WW2 Himmler got a letter to Churchill, who read it and destroyed it immediately.
I would like to know what that letter contained?
