I've not tried, but apparently, it's meant to be quite good on a q.

I like to stir fry it with some crunchy veg & a few oriental aromatics. A nice after-work supper that doesn't leave you feeling lead-footed & comatose.

how the f*** does a telephone work? How can I talk into a little bit of plastic and metal and someone thousands of miles away can hear me instantly. Ridiculous

The sound waves of your speech cause a paper/plastic diaphragm to vibrate, like a speaker in reverse. This is amplified by a coil around a magnet and converted in to an electric signal. This signal passes from your hand set in to binary code, to a receiver at a substation, which would be part of a network cell.

Once it reaches the substation, it goes down fibre optic or copper cable to the exchange where the call is routed to the person receiving, by copper wire, fibre optic, or satellite, or a combination of all 3 until it reaches it's destination.

The same applies to landlines, but with fibre optic and copper cable connecting to the exchange directly, where then the call is routed via whatever means to reach it's destination either next door or half way round the world.

Summink like that....

Well, nothing according to the physical theorists. Others say there was darkness across the face of the waters and still others say there was a giant turtle. You work it out.

When you really sit and think about it, that is one piece of amazing technology that doesn't get enough credit, it's just there and nobody thinks twice about it including me.... but it is a bit of a mind-blower

It's very good on veggie kebab's (ie the skewer type).
Chop it up into suitable sized pieces, add a load of veg (peppers, courgettes, etc) chopped into suitable sized pieces, chuck it all into a lunchbox, mix with marinade of your choice, and in an hour or so it's ready to be poked on a skewer, grilled over a barbie, emptied into a pitta or wrap, then wolfed down. Lovely!

As for why veggies eat quorn or tofu.. well it's protein innit....

I try and avoid such discussions, as it's like reinventing the wheel...so cheers Dan for attempting to speak some sense
The number of conversations I've had over the years...
"you're veggie? Oh, I couldn't be veggie, not enough protein"
"well there is if you eat the right things. Tofu, etc..."
"Oh, WTF do you eat that **** for...?" ...as he chomps down into some charcoaled lump of spine in a bap....

As a veggie you have to pay a bit more attention, make sure you get all the nutrients you need. Protein is one aspect you have to think about, and make sure what you eat has a decent balance of protein. It's very simple (well it should be... but seeing some of the stuff that is served as the veggie option in various places, it's obviously not that simple for some...), but you do have to think about what you eat.
Which I'd see as a good thing
Personally I can't stand quorn, but love tofu. Each to their own...

Nowt wrong with a good fry up every now and then.

You can eat a decent, healthy and balanced diet and include the odd greasy blow out, and still not have to eat pieces of tasteless plastic shaped like sausages.

Besides, I went out Saturday night and had a load of Coronas. Each Corona had a wedge of lime in it, so 5 Coronas = my 5-a-day sorted. This also works with Cider, which is made from apples.

As the thread is open, can anybody tell me what the river is called that separates Florence? I think it's called The Argo.

Also, maybe slightly more stupid question.... is it straight forward to cross, can you just walk across one of the bridges?

Me and The Mrs are probably going to go in September, she wants to go and see the Uffizi and various other places, as it would be quite helpful towards her career path. It looks as if the only places I can really afford are south of the river, but quite close to the City Centre. Any info would be great!

Also, one other un-related question. Am I the only person who feels sick every morning, from the smell of smoke and coffee as soon as I leave the station?

I know some people enjoy that stuff in the morning, but God it makes me feel awful!

the river is called Arno, and yes, it is straight forward to cross by foot.
the south of the river (or dila' d'arno, how we call it) is ok, especially if you're around santo spirito and piazza pitti. that's still considered city centre, and is very characteristic, a good place to stay.
I don't really know many accommodations, but i can take a look.
there are a couple of hostels as well (close to the central train station).

be prepared for a long queue to get into the Uffizi.
it is probably too late, but check if you can book a walk in the Vasari corridor.

let me know if you need more info (here or pm)
