Things you've always wanted to know......

Anything goes in The Snug, General Discussion's rebellious little brother. An off-topic den of iniquity where any subject not covered elsewhere may be discussed. Well, anything except golf, Star Wars and Arsenal.

Things you've always wanted to know......

But were too afraid to ask.

Just little things in life....and you're immune from having the pi$$ taken

2 questions....what does "(sic)" mean in a sentance ? and should you leave a space inbetween a word and an exclamation mark or question mark !!!! ??? (or should that be "question mark?")

Google "sic".

For punctuation, there is no space between the last letter of the word the question or exclamation mark. For reference, look at Pink Palermo's posts, and do exactly the opposite of what he does.

Sic is used when quoting something which has a mistake in it. It indicates to the reader that the mistake belongs to the original piece and not the quoter.

It's Latin for 'thus', the full phrase is sic erat scriptum, 'thus it was written'.

Thanks are due to Frank Mack, Latin master at Campion :)

I knew the meaning of 'sic', but I always thought it stood for "spelling is correct".

Pigeons are born as tiny, blind, featherless, ugly bleeders. They grow in the nest, get their feathers, and when it's time to fledge, they are exactly the same size, shape and colour as their parents.

This is perhaps not the best place to ask this question, but...

What is the purpose of these new three-wheeled moped arrangements, much favoured by the Met Police, where a low spec moped - or motorbike - has two smallish wheels at the front?

Is it for people who worry about balancing properly on a two-wheel vehicle?

As I understand it, some of them negate the need for motorcycle training. You can ride them on a standard car licence.

Why do lots of the mums at my daughter's school drive two wheel drive '4x4s'? What is the point?

When I say drive, I just mean panic as soon as they see you coming in a considerately sized car, even when there is room to drive a bus through the gap .

Makes sense, Del.

But do you think they realise quite how stupid it looks?

I must admit, I did look into buying one of these for getting to work, as they also have better grip and stability apparently. Then I found out they cost about six grand...
Looking stupid? Yeah I guess so, but to be honest I'm probably too old to care

in most of europe you can drive normal mopeds and small motorbikes (below 125cc and a power limit i cant remember) with the car license, no need for a third wheel!
