In 16/17, on medicines alone, an estimated £17 billion.
The NHS haven't received Monkeyb's memo yet..

'More than two-fifths of national health spending in the UK is devoted to people over 65'.

Why is Diesel more expensive than petrol? I thought it was a by product anyway.

Remaps. Why are they not standard? Why does my 1.6 diesel car come out the factory with 120BHP, yet with a simple remap I get 185BHP, and better fuel economy? That's a massive 65BHP extra the engine is capable of that's kept under wraps by the makers. The tuner reckoned with a clutch and brake upgrade, the engine would push over 200BHP. WTF?

Why? Have never understood it.

'Most modern vehicles contain an ECU (or Engine Control Unit) that is effectively a small computer which controls how the engine works. Vehicle manufacturers de-tune the engine by setting the software on the ECU to default before sending the vehicle out. This is done due to the manufacturers having to sell their cars all over the world; this means that the software settings on the ECU must take into account different climates, laws & restrictions and varying quality of fuels. Vehicle remapping is basically the modification/replacement of the manufactures default software on a vehicles ECU'.

I had never heard of this until your post, DL!

Yeah, I get that - but what I don't get is why some engines are so detuned, although to be fair, not all engines can have such huge gains as the Honda i-dtech lump, as the place told me - but even when I got my last car done, it was a 110BHP 1.5 Renault diesel, and they bumped that up to 140BHP.

I just find it all a bit odd.

DL , it's certainly something that people should consider before dumping over £60k on an RS4

People should consider it period. Last July I paid £350 to get my extra BHP. It would have been £260 if I hadn't had it dyno-tested to see the gains. They did have an offer on, so it was in effect the same as the normal price without the dyno.

I was fortunate as my standard engine, which had manufacturer quoted figures of 120BHP, was actually producing 128BHP.

They quoted my remap as being 178BHP, but it was actually a couple of decimal points under 185BHP. The maddest thing is the jump from 300nm of torque up to just over 400nm.

Got it done at Phantom Tuning near dartford. They've put the price up now, but £375 for those gains is still good.

https://kent.phantomtuning.co.uk/vrm-re ... 1&estimate

A ridiculously cheap way of getting extra performance. Ideally, I need to invest in some wider rubber and rims, but that's probably never going to happen now.

Engine development is the most costly part of car production. The more engines to have the greater the cost, not just the development, but the production and ongoing maintenance. This is why there is an alliance between Mercedes, Nissan and Renault for their engines.

My C220 has the same sized engine has the 200 below it and the 250 above it.

What was the difference in driving experience before & after, DL?

So rescuers can see in and count the mangled bodies

So cabin crew can see which side is best to evacuate and not deploy the slides into a zoo's lion enclosure for example.

So passengers' eyes are adapted to outside light in case of rapid evacuation, which is also why they dim the cabin lights.

Enjoy your next flight.
