This IS serious TO YOU, Rio.Rio wrote:Thanks gents. Forgive my meltdown. There’s people on here with more serious stuff going down. But everything is appreciated
Nice of you, but you don't need to apologise, mate.
I can't really add to the advice given, as it has been pretty brilliant so far.
Please try to cut out or at least, reduce the alcohol. It will only make things harder, in the long run.
Good luck with the investigations, Rio & keep us all updated.
There is ALWAYS hope.

Dan, have you ever spoken to a doctor about this?HammermanDan wrote:I feel suicidal, ive never admitted it before. Its gradually got worse. I just feel like a loser basically. You definitely aren't a loser, far from it, just admitting how you feel couldn't have been easy and must have taken a lot of courage, you have my respect for that.
Try contacting https://www.samaritans.org/ you might feel so much better just for talking.
You aren't alone Dan.

Somerset 's got it bang on. The Samaritans are always there, they don't judge you, don't dish out any advice/,BS, they just listen, at any time,on any day. If you get really low, call them, I have.HammermanDan wrote:I feel suicidal, ive never admitted it before. Its gradually got worse. I just feel like a loser basically. Again, your G P is first port of call.If he/she is not particularly approachable, find another one ( most are partnerships, and you can ask to see one of the others.)Personally, I think GP s have really upped their game in recent years in terms of mental health, and can be massively helpful.
They may well prescribe you some meds,if they do take them, despite what some say, they will most likely lift your mood and begin the move back to good health.
Above all, remember depression is an illness, just like diabeties, gout, the clap whatever, it's not about how **** the world is (though I agree it ain't great), it's not that your a failure( let's face it, if that was the criteria, WHU would have an in house shrink) it's a chemical imbalance. It can be horrific, but it can be cured.
Get some help Dan, plenty on here have, and will do all possible to support you.
Obviously,pm me if you like.
Get some help ,soon as. And don't be a stranger. Best Wishes, you can sort this.

Re: A thread to discuss depression and other mental issues...
Dan: please see your doctor. I have been where you are mate, sinking and sinking and feeling nothing is worth going on for but it is. You can get the help you deserve. I know you say you feel helpless but that is the depression. You will be surprised how many people sink into this depth of despair. Your doctor can help you. There is no shame in admitting to your doctor how you feel. It could be something as 'simple' as a slight chemical imbalance in your brain that is leaving you feeling so helpless. I was given antidepressants and offered talking therapy which helped so much. No one would bat an eyelid if we had something wrong with our body and needed medication but when it is our mind we believe there is a stigma. there is not. You can be mended, Dan. And you deserve to be mended.HammermanDan wrote:I feel suicidal, ive never admitted it before. Its gradually got worse. I just feel like a loser basically. Re: A thread to discuss depression and other mental issues...
I don't want to upset people by saying some of this, but I've always had the phrase 'that puts everything into perspective' as a load of old cobblers.Rio wrote:Thanks gents. Forgive my meltdown. There’s people on here with more serious stuff going down. But everything is appreciated
If I hear of 100 kids on the news that have died in a tragic accident, yes it's desperately sad, but it puts absolutely nothing into perspective for me. Next day, my problems will still be my problems.
A person's problems are only as bad as their ability or inability to deal with them.
If your issue(s) objectively don't hold up in gravitas to another's, should that make your life any easier?
Some people have the ability to live through mountains of debt, lost loved ones and personal health issues without as much as breaking stride, whereas I've heard people contemplate suicide simply down to not getting the results they've wanted to get at University.
The sad irony, is that whist some issue need work and are tangible and present, some other problems are never as serious as the person thinks. That's what makes mental issues such a clusterfuck to deal with.
This place should never be bound by rules of objectivity and it should never, ever stop people from sharing how they feel.

Re: A thread to discuss depression and other mental issues...
Well said rars.
Also, Rio, my wife used to get a numbness or strange tingling in her hands. Sometimes it affected her shoulders and arms. She saw several specialists and they couldn't work out what it was until one suggested she tried a very, very low dose of an anti-depressant. This anti-depressant helped relax her body and now she doesn't suffer. I cannot remember the name of the anti-depressant, but she has no side-effects as the dose really is so low. If you see your GP it might be worth inquiring about it, and I can get the name of the drug if it helps.

Re: A thread to discuss depression and other mental issues...
HammerDan -
Please, please, please follow Somerset's and Tenbury's advice. One thing about this thread is that it reminds us all that what you are feeling is far more prevalent than we all initially think it is. The problem is not you mate - it really isn't it. I was stranded in Southampton for a couple of years with no-one to rely on, doing a job I was no good at, with a feeling that I have no prospects to find happiness. I suffered depression, anxiety, depersonalisation syndrome and, probably worst of all, utter emptiness - and everyone else around me getting on. I saw no way out. I lost myself in that moment.
What you feel now isn't the template for the rest of your life mate. You've been brave enough to come on here. I didn't do that. I just ranted bollox on the GD (ok, I still do that every now and then). I was SO lucky to have one person basically drag me to the GP who got me into CBT and some low level meds. It started a process that helped me rebuild my life. Start that process if you can mate. Calling Samaritans is a great start. As Tenbury says, GPs are better these days dealing with how you are feeling, so please see a GP if you can as well.
If you're not ready to either of those, then keep talking to us on here. Just keep talking mate. This not your fault and there are many, many of us who completely sympathise with how you are feeling.
Please stay in touch.

It might not feel like it Dan but admitting it on here is a very positive thing that you have done.HammermanDan wrote:I feel suicidal, ive never admitted it before. Its gradually got worse. Feeling that you are a loser or that you can't be mended are classic symptoms of depression.
What they also are is a sign that you need to think about seeking help for your feelings.
You have already made a start by posting on this thread.
Good luck Dan. You are not alone, even if it feels like it..

Dan
As Samba said, use you posting on here as the first step to helping yourself recover. It won't be easy, you will have good days and bad days, what you need to do now is to try and get support and help around you.
Make an appointment with your GP.
As well as Samaritans you also have http://www.mind.org.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, http://www.mentalhealth.org.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, http://www.sane.org.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, http://www.headstogether.org.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; to name a few. Look at their websites, see if anything resonates with how you feel, some of them have forums where you can discuss matters with fellow suffers and carers if you don't feel like talking to someone.
If you have friends and family then be honest with them, allow them the chance to try to support you, professionally I find friends of people that have committed suicide say "if they asked for help I would of" or "I had no idea". I genuinely think you will be surprised by the people closest to you, and in a positive way.
If you ever find yourself very low then don't be afraid to ring 999. Whoever comes to you, be it Ambulance or Police, will not judge you, they will try their hardest to support you at that moment, and hopefully moving forwards.
As others have said, good luck, and please keep posting when you feel the need.

Absolutely Rars, a top post if I may say so.rare as rockinghorse shat wrote:

Even if someone thinks that their particular issue is trivial compared to some of the others, it matters not one jot. The point being that what seems trivial to one person can be a load bearing bag of crap for someone else.
Rio and HammerDan, keep talking and sharing, you may well find it helps, if not on here then elsewhere.
Please do this.
Brilliant responses from Westcliff, Dr venk, Samba, Dibble, Somerset,Bristol and anyone else that I have forgotten(sorry)..
It makes me really proud to be a member of this site.
Really proud.

Re: A thread to discuss depression and other mental issues...
I v'e written then binned this post several times , many people here exude a positivity that's so helpful , and I'd be genuinely mortified if I thought I'd damaged that in any way.Mental illness CAN be overcome, GPs are , overwhelmingly, very helpful ,meds are good and they work.
I've been bipolar ,officially, for 40 years, but it',s probably 50,as I was a bit crazy as a teen. It's quite trendy these days, so I've grown my hair long again to celebrate.
My working life has always been a haphazard mess of different self-employed jobs that have seen me muddle through. and I need to work.
There's not a lot around for a 63 year old nutjob. After an episode 5 years ago,DVLA medics took my licence for12 months, they gave it back, initially for a year subsequently indefinitely. The local cab firm wanted me to get badged up for airport work(I already clean/maintain their motors 15 hours a week).
I've passed all the driving/ knowledge/ medical exams, including an advanced C1 medical, plus an approving letter from my shrink. All this has taken 4 months, and cost over £450.
The council have put obstacle after obstacle in front of me.Now my application's to go before a licencing panel.I'm not allowed to attend it,can't be represented, and can't see the minutes. In their latest letter they say 'we have to ask ourselves the question: Would you be happy letting your child in a car with this person?'......I have three children of school age.......I've got a ,PGCE,if I wasn't so crap at it I could sign up to a supply agency and be teaching kids within 48 hours. I'm really offended.
I've done quite a bit to get to this point, I don't want help, but would they be like this if I'd had a stroke?
I thought there was legislation against disability discrimination.
This won't end well.
Rant over.
Please, please don't let this mess up this thread.

That sounds really irritating Tenbury. Just try to stay positive because there's no point getting het up about it when you may well be approved.

Bloody hell Tenners, that's terrible mate. Stephen Fry is allowed to drive a taxi and he doesn't even need it for an income!
I would write to your local MP. I know of a couple of cases where an MP has lobbied on behalf of people with a mental health issue and they did invoke some articles of the equality and diversity act to get a positive result. I can't remember the cases or what the health conditions were, but it's worth a shot.
Hope it works out. Keep us informed on here fella

Thanks .
Bit of a rant really.I think can appeal any refusal, but that will cost more money. Ironically I find people easy to deal with face to face , the council won't meet me.
I stopped all my meds, and tried to turn 360 to do this, maybe it was a mistake.

Get your MP to appeal on your behalf if that ends up being the case. They should be 100% deferring to the judgment of your GP.
