Born in Romford hospital. Maybe it was the North wing. :)

Never touched a jellied eel either.

1. Do you eat your pies face up, or upside down? Up, unless the pastry is hard baked, in which case down

2. Do you eat with a knife and fork or a fork and spoon? Fork and spoon. I’m no barbarian

3. The mash: ice cream scoops or scraped on the side? Scrape

4. Accompanying drink: mug of tea, orange squash or something else? Orange squash

5. Do you take your plate back to the counter upon leaving?Back to the counter. I’m no barbarian

This thread, and associated picture, has made me very, very hungry.

Upside-down.

Up the Junction wrote:2. Do you eat with a knife and fork or a fork and spoon?

Fork and spoon, always. Make sure you use proper cutlery though. I was given a plastic spoon and fork with my two-and-two in Lakeside and the spoon shattered and nearly took my bloody eye out.

Up the Junction wrote:3. The mash: ice cream scoops or scraped on the side?

Scraped ideally, but I won't quibble if the mash comes scooped. It's not a dealbreaker the way a knife or a right-way-up pie is.

Up the Junction wrote:4. Accompanying drink: mug of tea, orange squash or something else?

Egads, man! Tea! If it's a refreshing cold drink you're after, wait until your mug of splosh has gone cold, then drink it.

Up the Junction wrote:5. Do you take your plate back to the counter upon leaving?

Plates back please, we're not savages.

Oh, and I bloody knew this dong-with-a-face-drawn-on would pipe up:

Why have all that nonsense with the pie when you can have chips and ketchup?

Hey Skeletor, it comes as no surprise to me that you eat all your food with a spoon. I assume your helper serves it by the choo choo train method.

I miss our chats my spoon wielding friend. Love your faux outrage that you were given a plastic one, they always give you a plastic one don't they? Or a fork with a cork on the end as per Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

No Mr Caress, that is not mother.....

Is it bad form to eschew the parsley sauce? I’ve always fancied trying pie & mash but am unconvinced by the addition of boiled slime-fish water to the plate.

Think I've tried jellied eels, but I wasn't particularly fussed. Looks like a lot of places leave the eel stock out of the sauce recipe these days, so perhaps I ought to make a trip some time to see what the fuss is about.

Any recommendations on pie shops? Bear in mind I live in Surrey, so somewhere easily accessed from here would be a boon.

In the original photo that Utj posted, is that the normal portion size? Three pies and a half lb of mash? How does anyone walk after that?

1. Do you eat your pies face up, or upside down? Face up but scrape a few holes in. Some pepper and then plenty (and I mean plenty) of the hottest chilli vinegar they have. Over the pie, the mash but especially the liquor/

2. Do you eat with a knife and fork or a fork and spoon? fork and spoon

3. The mash: ice cream scoops or scraped on the side? Scraped

4. Accompanying drink: mug of tea, orange squash or something else? Mug of tea. Too hot to drink until after eating

5. Do you take your plate back to the counter upon leaving? Always

Haven't had that for forty years. Where do they still serve it? Might have to do a lengthy detour next time I'm over.
