Best Shop Bought Burgers .

Postby The Old Man of Storr on Wed Jun 06, 2018 9:34 pm

Was in Aldi shopping the other day - we didn't have that much room in the car due to luggage etc so I just grabbed a few essentials , meat , vegetables , fruit juice , a few beers for Jen and Dan .
I grabbed a few packets of burgers , wagyu , chilli and some burgers impregnated with cheese , chicken breasts , pork chops etc - It's been so hot here of late that all we fancy is a light snack so burgers were perfect - I cooked chilli burgers on Sunday then tonight I cooked the cheesy burgers - the chilli ones were a little on the mushy side but the cheese ones were delicious , you wouldn't really know there was cheese in the ingredients .
Now I've bought burgers from most supermarkets and we make home made beef , chicken , turkey and pork burgers , I would say that out of all the supermarket burgers I prefer the Aldi fresh range of burgers and the ones with cheese are my favourite , the Wagyu were a bit on the mushy side too but very tasty with an excellent beef flavour , tonight's were excellent though with mayonnaise , a drop of tomato sauce mixed with a drop of peri peri , gherkin slices and tomato , toasted brioche buns - yummy .

Which shop bought burgers are your favourite ?

I either make my own or get the ones from the local cash and carry (Hyperama). Box of 48 for about £20 and are the large flat ones that you get served up from a road side burger van. Hate to think whats in them but they taste good.

As above, the catering pack ones always seem rather nice, plus being large but thin cook better......

If I may.

Find a Butcher who can tell you where the meat comes from, what farm, what it was fed etc and how long he aged it. If he doesn’t know, he probably doesn’t care, so keep looking til you find one. Aim for 20% fat content and don’t add anything to it until you’ve cooked it on your kettle bbq over high quality lumpwood.

A faff, perhaps, and not the cheapest, but burgers are meant to be a treat, not something you eat frequently, so do it properly.

Hadn't thought of butcher's own to be honest , mainly because the only butcher's shop within a 30 mile radius is the one in Kyle Of Lochalsh , after that there's a portakabin in Portree , after that it's Inverness [ a 200 + mile round trip for us ] but next time I'm in Inverness or Kyle I might do as you ask , thanks for the advice , mate .

On a related note, any good, reliable recipes for burger buns? I've tried making my own before, but they were never as fluffy or nice as shop bought ones.

Leave them on the baking tray after taking them out of the oven and they will be softer.

Tried that, too. I'm okay at making bread, nothing too fancy or challenging there, but I've never had much luck with rolls.

Might give these ones a try at the weekend, although some people seem to have struggled a bit, judging by the comments https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/brioche-buns
