During the (I believe) Spurs league cup quarter final game at a sardine-packed Upton Park (forgot to say, Dec 1980), the match ball got booted up on top of the East Stand roof & stayed there. From the South Bank you could see where the ball had settled at the front of the roof. A new ball was thrown on the pitch.
The next morning in school, some kid turned up with the lost match ball!
At the end of the match, he had hid somewhere, waited until everyone had gone home & then climbed on top of the East Stand roof & retrieved the ball.
I still don't really know how he did it & what risk he exposed himself to. Or what time he finally got home that night.
Or what the groundsman said when he went up to get it & it was gone!
