Smart Watches

Postby sussexhammer74 on Wed Oct 17, 2018 12:35 pm

Anybody have one? Any good? Do they look ok?

The Mrs asked me "What I want for Xmas" and I replied "Dunno" and she said "How bout a smart watch".

So budget wont be high and wondering are they worth it? I have an android phone so can pair them up.

Have read up on them but still not sure so I am asking the Snug for advice!

I agree, the one I bought doesn't work unless the sun is shining on the dial.

Like all these things it depends what you want from it.

I do a fair bit of walking so got a middle of the road FtiBit and it does all I need - tracks steps, logs routes, email, text or WhatsApp notification, decent silent alarm etc.

I have a Samsung phone and syncs to the app very easily and records accurately.

Personally, wouldn't spend a fortune on one that you can take calls on (holding a watch to you mouth to me is a bit ridiculous looking), listen to music on etc etc.

As I said all down to personal preference.

As NM says it depends what you want. For years I had cheap watches, spend less than £30 use for a year or two then throw away. Then a couple of years ago I decided I wanted a decent watch, spend about £200. After looking at a few I saw a couple of smart watches. After a bit of research I chose an Huawei.

I enjoy choosing different faces, though tbh I don't change much. Useful to see who is calling or quickly check texts, I wouldn't use the phone to text. I do use to measure activity but that is more to compare day to day. My wife has a fitbit and religiously tries to do more than 10k steps and counts calories burnt.

I would say think what you want it for, gimmick or real purpose.

I have a Samsung Smart Watch, which was a gift from the wife.

I use it to tell the time, if I forget to look at my phone.

Apple are missing a trick there in terms of marketing.

Can a smart watch still monitor your heart rate, step count etc. if the wrist it is on is not attached to the body?

they are mostly for people who HAVE to have anything Apple....

people talking to their watches.....

have a mate who owns pretty much everything apple, Ipad, Ipod, Ipod non x 2, Iwatch...

then he calls (or rather did, Ecuador is rather a long way away from 'ouston) every couple of days asking how to download off the cloud, or he can't find his itunes and wonders where they are or that.

Skypes me the other day on his phone to tell me he can't get internet and asks me what to do..

People who can't figure out how to work stuff they own, shouldn't own it in the first place !!!!!!!!

I must admit that I quite like the phone and text integration when I'm working on site. I don't have to take my phone out of my pocket to check whether it's worth replying or not.

I think they're better than those google glasses that came out a few years ago. I fear those may reappear in the near future.

Yep that's one of the things I like, plus my phone is on silent when in meetings but the watch tells me who is calling - I can check who is calling quickly without getting my phone out just in case it is a call that I should break out of the meeting for.

That will mess up your step count. One of the attention seeking old bints at my place has one and she said that hers thought she was working out because of all the wrist movements she made whilst knitting!

You are looking at your watch during meetings?
Would have been a large forfeit for doing this at one of my old workplaces.

A quick glance. Sounds like an odd place, most places I have worked have tried to limit meeting times in order to be more productive and encourage being aware of how long left.

I learnt a few years ago from one of the best PMs I ever worked for, each meeting should have a sensible time limit and should not overrun by more than ten percent. This taught me to check the time and not let meetings waffle on to no good purpose.

You are correct, it was an odd place.
The most effective working environment I ever worked in though.
I don't think I have ever been in a meeting room though without one of those big clocks on the wall.
Hence being caught looking at your watch was a sign of rudeness.
