Gants Hill (non whu)

Postby westhamshares on Mon Nov 12, 2018 8:56 am

Many on the forum will have roots that may include Ilford and more specifically Gants Hill.

For those unaware the local borough in Redbridge are hell bent on converting just about every building into residential the Odeon where I saw Ian Dury is now a residential complex as it just about every building on the roundabout.

The council bought the block of shops that includes Faces nightclub and are now its landlords but did so in order to take ownership of the st Giorgio hotel - some of us may we’ll have rented a room there after being at faces but this will no longer be possible as it’s been closed and the council intend to use it to assist In Solving their temporary homeless crisis.

Those who can remember the pioneer market might be surprised to find that this one story building is now two tower blocks one of 35 floors ! You can see it on the train from Liverpool st as you approach Ilford And the council have accepted similar plans for the Bodgers site

Now they intend to do something to the one story Gants Hill Library that I as a child and my children used

it would really be appreciated if you could help stop this over development by signing the petition https://www.change.org/p/jas-athwal-red ... evelopment" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and retweeting from @woodsestateFG #savegantshilllibrary

I used to have a Saturday job in Gants Hill library in the late 90s. Can't believe they're contemplating knocking that down.

the area i grew up in bears no resemblance to the mess that it has become today , every building has been converted to huge blocks of flats , the over zealous parking controls have generally wiped out shops , although this is indicative of many areas , not just here im surprised the library is still open tbh , have many a fond memory of going there with my mum in the late 60's and early 70's .

A microcosm of what councils are doing all over the place - try and sell every scrap of land to build flats on as it gives the most short term cash.

Most of suburban east london will be densely over populated ****hole with few amenities in a generation's time.

Valentines pub was going to be a 10 storey block of flats but I think is currently just boarded up without work taking place - will take a walk past tonight to confirm

http://www.ilfordrecorder.co.uk/news/fo ... -1-5593445

Alsmosy everything on the roundabout has been changed to circa 10 story residential including the long closed post office the next door office block the car dealership everything is now multi story residential

Used to be a nice place.

I lived there in the very late 80's in a flat above a bookies - used to get the dog racing commentary coming in through the floor every saturday morning.

Like so many places, it's a shitheap now.

That's a pretty sad read. I worked around there about 12years ago in my yoof, was a nice enough place then. Unbelievable what the councils are doing.

Isnt this what cash strapped councils are doing more or less everywhere though?
I cant think of another local borough that hasnt got so called affordable housing being built everywhere.
