Put the kettle on, pull up a chair, and click on this, for an incredible slideshow of old Newham, from the beginning of the 20th century on, basically.

Wonder if anyone remembers the visit to Cumberland, in the late 80s?

Would love to hear any stories of the Curwen Press, in Plaistow. Anyone work there?

Enjoy these photos; I can't believe I've not seen them before.

I'm not normally all that bothered by bugs etc, but my word this one might be a bit different.

How it hid away for 38 years, god only knows!

World's largest bee, missing for 38 years, found in Indonesia

I spent ages looking at a huge canvas by Joseph Wright of Derby, an experiment on a bird I think it was called, just incredible that someone can have that much talent at something, no photoshop or airbrushing then, just canvas , paint and awesome skill.

Just seen this thread. We went there last week and I was staring at the same painting. Amazing! The size of the picture shocked me too, the picture below doesn't do it justice! From a distance, it looks like a photo.

^ I remember when I was in Paris going to the Louvre and seeing the Mona Lisa. It's a big room with this tiny portrait at one end with a velvet rope forming a large perimeter around it and a big crowd gawping at the famous painting. I was somewhat underwhelmed by it, I didn't really think it was worth the hype.

At the other end of the same room though is The Last Supper, which is huge and is indeed a very impressive painting.
