You Wanna Know How I Got These Cars?

Renault 5, column-change 100 quid in 1984. 'Reliably' informed that it used to belong to Eddie Grant (of Electric Avenue fame) so, stardust, I bought it. Piece of **** never made it to the next MOT. He was probably in an open-top Merc by then. Further, while at school a mechanically-minded mate bought a fossilised Ford Anglia from our art teacher for 5 quid. No-one expected him (with me helping) to get the bloody thing on the road, on which the police quickly nicked us for having no licence/insurance/MOT/being 15 and everything. Later in life, I 'inherited' a 1976 Ford Escort automatic, apparently a bit of unique museum piece so I spent money on it. Electrics broke down continually. I left it on a farm in Cornwall when I went to the Scillies, but a scrap dealer mistook it for an old wreck the farmer owned and dumped a defunct tractor on top of it when clearing land.

After years of driving 50-quidders, I've (recently!) joined the human race and buy new-ish cars with servicing and warranty (and direct-debits).

(now me missus is in management, she's talking 24 grand for 4WD - I'm just allergic to that!)

Motors you've had?

First car was a Hillman Imp Californian in 1970. The biggest,( or smallest) whichever way you look at it, pile of crap on the road at the time. Continually let me down every time I took it out. Got utterly ****ed off with it blowing head gaskets, of which they were notorious, if I had lived near cliffs, I would have pushed it off them. Complete and utter pile of ****. Second, was VW Beetle, the best car I've ever head, wish I still had it. Sold it for a ****ing Skoda Estelle. What the **** Next was a Citroen, can't think what type though, another absolute ****ing pile of ****, purposely wrote that one off and then got the architypal Essex wide boy's car, a Ford Capri, loved that motor and it's true, you could pull any bird you wanted, with a Ford Capri. Next was a whole series of Rover's had about 4 of them, Inc a few Executive models, then a company Beamer. Current motor is a Volvo 4x4, classy thing

Of all the boring middle of the road cars I have owned, the only one I ever loved was an Alfa 147. On my 40th birthday I traded it in for a 3 year old diesel Ford Focus.

Middle age could not be represented any more starkly.

My very first car wa an MG Midget - I wasn't looking for one as such but I needed a car and a man who worked with my sister at the Nat West Bank wa selling his and it just so happened to be an MG - it had an 8 track stereo fitted in it along with a sports steering wheel , it cost me all od £400 and I loved it . I ended up trading it in for a Morris Marina .
First car I ever drove on the road was an Austin A30 - it didn't have an MOT , I wan't insured and I hadn't passed my test , I took 3 of my friends out in it for a joy ride while my parents were out at Bingo .

Blue Mini Metro that cost me a pint!
I was carless at the time and a colleague was gong to scrap his Metro, having bought an Escort. said "Don't scrap it, I'll buy it off you." He refused and said he'd give it to me. I said I'd not take it as a gift and he said "OK, buy me a pint, then." . The deal was done and I drove it for over a year.
It was a navy blue pile of poo but it was MY pile of poo. Bought and paid for......

Hmmm, let me think, from aged 17 - 30

Mk II Cortina (Nicked)
Mk IV Cortina (Sold I think)
Cavalier SRi (Sold)
Rover 216 GTi (Written off on M25 in 70mph crash)
XR2 (sold)
Rover 220 Coupe (sold)

Then went travelling and didn't have a car for a few years, came back to live in Romford

Ford Fiesta (Nicked)

Then moved to Brighton where don't really need a car. Eventually succumbed to getting cheap runabouts that I can literally throw away if they go wrong

Another Fiesta - Cost £300 lasted about a year, scrapped
Vauxhall Vectra - Cost £800, ran into ground, sold for scrap £180
Ford Cortina - Cost £200 (yes, I upcycled my car for a net cost of £20 :tune: ), sold for scrap £60
Now in VW Passat - Cost £300. Still going strong 3 years later. Been Devon and back 3 times, never missed a beat. Only major complaint is the driver electric window is jammed.

Think that's the lot.

My roll call:
Cortina MkIII Estate. I can't think of a more stupid first car, but it was given to me.
Capri MkII 2.0 GT. Cornering like a shopping trolley.
Escort MkI 1300 GT. Gutless, Daytona Yellow but with a purple boot.
Escort MkI 1100. Drum brakes all round, wouldn't stop in reverse.
Austin Princess. Probably the worst car I've owned. Appeared in Beadles About because the suspension had collapsed and they couldn't move it out of the way for filming.
Cortina MkIV. Had a couple of these, one got nicked and the other one bangered.
Montego. Another punt at a BL basket case, I bought another one for spares but ended up keeping that one and stripping out the original. However, despite virtually following each other off of the production line no two parts were the same.
Escort MkIII. So bland I can't remember what I done with it, it was blue.
Sierra Ghia. All the bells and whistles, lovely motor. Auto box went and I lost reverse gear, made parking interesting.
Escort MkIII. Again, this one was red.
Granada Ghia. Cost a bomb to run, got nicked over Christmas.
Focus. Really nice car, fuel injection pump eventually went bang.
Megane CC. Mid life crises convertible. French so naturally unreliable.
Pulsar. My current ride, leased........
