Pedants' corner

Postby spod on Wed Jan 09, 2019 11:46 am

Feel free to delete this if you like, but I feel the need for a place to express my bottled-up rage at the small, harmless grammatical and other errors made by the good people of KUMB.

If you see anything that grates with you, please add it. Otherwise it'll just be me, raging by myself, which is fine by me.

I mean no criticism of anyone. I just need an outlet for my spleen.

First up:
Compliment/complement.
Rice doesn't need a midfield partner to compliment him. I'm sure he gets enough of that already.
He needs someone to complement him.

The substitution of idiomatic phrases for specific adjectives. My wife's English is pretty good, but she obviously picks up ways of speaking from her colleagues. This is a sign of good integration so I don't criticise it, but from native speakers, come on.

e.g. She's very "I'm better than you" instead of the option: She's very arrogant and superior.

You have to realise this is how many of us speak in conversation. Anyone learning a second language in-country (There! I did it!) will focus on idiomatic speech as a means of communication whereas native speakers ought to have more articulate choices of vocabulary.

...and I'm like...what? instead of I was confused/I didn't understand.

I'm hearing...I'm thinking...I'm getting

All of these can irritate, but I hear myself coming out with them as well! Like.

Kind of a forgivable (forgiveable?) error cos they sound exactly the same and the Latin alphabet is practically useless at conveying English pronunciation. Something you have to grow up with.

A sign outside a Chinese restaurant here said "Complimentary crab with every order over 36 pounds"

You could imagine the little ****er sidling up on the table saying "You look beautiful".

An empty bottle of.....

No.

It's and empty (whatever) bottle.
You cannot have an empty bottle of pills; you can have an empty pill bottle.
You cannot have an empty bottle of beer; you can have an empty beer bottle.

This is everywhere, even on the News, and irritates me.

Seemingly confusing these two leaves me wondering whether the poster has intended to mean what he's actually written:

effect/affect

Similarly with -

imply/infer
