Your Coping Mechanisms For Stress .

Postby The Old Man of Storr on Thu Jan 10, 2019 11:18 am

Stress - at one time or another it comes to us all and everyone's coping mechanisms will be different - in the past I would turn to drink but I haven't touched alcohol for about 10 years , so now I find myself using another method - I find myself something really good on the television and I get lost in it until I'm ready to face my problems once again . I accept that peoples' lives are all different and our levels of stress can depend on each individual's case but I found that by losing myself in a film or some box set or other I could try to forget or put my problems to the back of my mind for as long as the programme lasted . The problem is still there of course but at least I've not thought about it for a little while at least .

How do you cope ?

* Walking the dog
* Running
* Weed/booze
* Xbox
* Television

Perspective.

I had a little stroke a few years back which was at least partly attributable to stress. Now I can't take life seriously. If I feel myself getting stressed I try to zoom out of the situation and think through whatever it is that's bugging me. Grade its importance from 1 to 10. If it's less than 8, which it always is, let it go.

Of course, I'm lucky that I've never been in a situation where I'm going to be made homeless or whatever, nothing really stressful, so it's easy to be glib.

Getting blind drunk.

On a school night, trying to get my son off the PS4 and a few rounds of losing badly on CoD4.

I don't get stressed.

I genuinely don't believe anything I do is important enough to be that bothered about. Try your best, it's usually good enough. If it isn't, why worry?

I also don't get embarrassed. I don't know if it's linked.

As soon as I pressed the ' send ' button I realised that this post / thread could be considered a bit insensitive considering what our colleague , DL is currently going through , believe me I didn't mean to cause any offence .

Just before Christmas my wife , Jennie discovered there were traces of blood in her urine - of course I thought the worst and was worrying myself sick - then dear old DL came on here with a similar problem so until I'd found out exactly what was going on I didn't want to share it on here - We tried to hide it from the kids but our Daughter realised there was something going on and eventually dragged it out of us .
We only discovered last Monday [ 7th Jan ] that there wasn't anything to worry about but between late December and early January I had watched 4 seasons of ' The Walking Dead ' - it helped me cope with the stress and worry .

Glad to hear that TOMOS.

I Had to take time off work a few months ago due to the stress of my job. I'm now back to work in a different role, but to combat what was going on I threw myself into my children and grandchildren and enjoyed their company as much as possible. They are the most important thing to me, along with my wife obviously - she is a constant. In addition to this I decided to write a book as a way of relaxing and to give me a focus other than work. I'm currently on page 146 and, whilst it's not the works of Shakespeare, I'm really pleased with it thus far.

Big thank you to TOMOS for some info that is plot relevant :thup:
