The flaw here is that it's a "survey".

I'd say data encryption and GPS were quite a bit older than that.

And......some of them aren't really inventions but variations on a theme ie the ones that rely on the invention of the internet.

Facebook is not a proper invention to my mind.

If you look at the extension of GPS tech though, sat nav stands out for me as being probably my favourite.

I'd have said broadband making the world a smaller place and enabling instant contact with the otherside of the globe in a way that phone lines couldn't previously, but I think broadband is older than 25 years?

Game consoles have been around a bit longer that this too. Had my first in 1976.

Spotify, but no Napster or Audiogalaxy?

Can't see KUMB on this list either. :)

Broadband as in ADSL in the UK , I think as a BT engineer I fitted my first one in around 97, otherwise it was the old ISDN

If we're talking finances, I'd have Paypal way ahead of anything else on the list. Has opened up cashless online (and now offline) shopping for millions of folk.

I'm not sure why, but I find that quite a depressing list.

It feels like a lot of those aren't really inventions, or are just developments based on the internet i.e internet shopping and banking.

25 years of progress, and all there is to show for it is a bunch of apps and gadgets that people think they needed but don't really.

I want a pill that doubles useful life span, cures for a range of diseases, teleportation, bionic knees, a way to have stubble stop growing once it gets to a preferred length, a shirt with built in climate control, nano robot bees that pollinate, a super bacteria that's able to decompose plastic, a genetically engineered fish that eats McDonalds straws, the ability to upload information directly into your brain like in The Matrix, genetically engineered cows bred to have the same fear of humans as sheep, and so on....

But no... I get none of that. Give it another 10 years and all I've probably got to look forward to is another 1000 apps that enable me to share things that I previously had no interest in sharing, and a talking internet connected fridge that costs a fortune and orders me food that I don't want.

I met an Inventor in Bangladesh a few years ago who had worked for Hoover for many years. And he said that one of his main motivation's was to make things work harder and do more, so that people could have more free time, and that specifically for him, Mum's could have more time with their kids, as he had grown up with a mother who spent literally all day washing clothes and cleaning the house with old-fashioned tools.

He said that the best inventions of his generation were things that gave people the gift of 'time' - washing machines, hoovers, aeroplanes.

He then said, if you look at the 'best' and most 'popular' inventions of today. They are all things that arguably waste our time:-

Facebook, Angry Birds, Twitter etc.

We were given the gift of time by wonderful inventors. And we choose to spend it watching porn and baiting ITK posters on KUMB.

It's a funny old world.
