Re: West Ham United v Southampton: Match Thread
We had a 20 minute spell toward the end of the first half.
They should have scored a few in the early exchanges of the second half. Particularly Lallana's.

Like I said originally, I don't think they outplayed us.
Re: West Ham United v Southampton: Match Thread
I agree. If they had outplayed us they would have won.orbital wrote:

It's a simple game. Whoever scores most and concedes least wins.

For future reference, your book is a little out of date. The 'daylight' rule was changed some years ago.MK Hammer 3 wrote:They said it was offside on MOTD, but made no mention of the 'there has to be a gap between forward and the last man'. Funny, for a one-dimensional long ball team we had to wait till February to score our first headed goal.
I don't think Southampton outplayed us. They had a few good spells of pressure where they created excellent chances and wasted them. Once we went in front I never thought we would lose.
i'm enjoying the current form and no whining about how much possession we had or how lucky we might have been is going to change it.

Why did they?Billydinho wrote:And Southampton did.
You seem to be ignoring the fact that putting the ball in the net is part of playing well.

So Southampton are a better team then us because they have scored more goals this season?carnage wrote:

And have more points.

At the end of the season - you can determine who has been the better team.mushy wrote:

I'm inclined to say that given their superior investment, we'll respectfully finish quite close behind them and are not far off them. Arguably, without the injuries, we could well be above them.
All ifs and buts in football.

Re: West Ham United v Southampton: Match Thread
Some people really over analyse games sometimes.
Southampton were always going to dominate the possession and so probably have more shots. Credit to Allardyce, he set us up to frustrate us and play to our strengths. It isn't always pretty but it was effective this week.
Over all the game was probably quite even, they had roughly the same amount of good chances as us but we finished ours where they didn't. That's football, there's no right or wrong way of playing it except that goals win games.
As for Saints fans whinging about the first goal being offside (incidentally, why are they so obsessed with us?), their goal shouldn't have been a free kick - no contact equals no foul. I don't go in for all this "intent" b*llocks, this isn't basketball, football's a contact sport. Also, our second goal, the ball only fell to Cole on the rebound after it hit the defender on the hand, so if we didn't get the "luck" of it falling right to Cole then we should have had a penalty.

No. Southampton are a better side than us because they have conceded fewer goals than their opposition more times than we have.mushy wrote:

.
This notion that you can create 25 chances/shots, score 1 but lose 3-1 to a team that create half that but score 3 but be deemed to have outplayed them is nonsense to me.

(I think).
So you can only really outplay a team by scoring more than them and letting in less then them?
Are they better than us or not?
I am getting very confused.

Re: West Ham United v Southampton: Match Thread
In my view you can outplay a team and still lose, we've all seen games over the years where a team has been all over another and just can't score (whether through heroic defending, a bit of luck or just sheer inept shooting). The team under seige then nick a goal and cling on.
But on Saturday what we saw was a game where our defence was better than Southanpton's attack and our attack was better than their defence; in the middle when not under pressure they knocked it around nicely. So I find it hard to understand in what way they outplayed us.

They appear to be better than us because they are higher in the League. We will only know for sure at the end of the season.mushy wrote: I see.

Re the Southampton game, we outplayed them, we scored 3, they scored 1. The fact they conceded 3 is because they played poorly in defensive areas, and the reason they only scored one was down to our defence and them playing poorly in the attacking 3rd.

Re: West Ham United v Southampton: Match Thread
It reminds me of Leicester fans, many years ago, claiming that they were a better side than Liverpool because they had done the double over them. But err.. Liverpool won the league while Leicester were relegated !
