Re: Pre-season:Stevenage FC vs West Ham United FC: Match Thread
Was at the match in the home end behind the goal.
First goal was a howler from Adrian, let's hope that's it for the season and he doesn't carry on with the Casillas dodgy keeper vibe. Not a lot else to report apart from we had quite a lot of the ball in and around the box in the first half, yet no one had a crack at goal - almost as if they'd been told not to shoot from the edge of the box!
Morrison and Kouyate both showed some decent touches. Not sure why we played the whole game without a single first team striker, almost like the playing half a team of midfielders who get forward that seemed to be popular in the earlier stages of the World Cup.

Just got back from the match
Poyet looked really impressive but Cresswell looked poor. Adrian was having a mare - not only did Nolan berate him for shocking keeping, but shortly afterwards he didn't collect an easy ball across the box which led to them hitting the post and Reid gave him a rollicking too.
The 2nd half 11 were better than the 1st half 11, Downing was quality
Where were all our strikers today ? No AC, no CC, no Zarate.............. McCallum 1st half (don't remember him touching the ball) and Lee 2nd half

How poor ? I know this is only one match, but I didn't join in with all the euphoria that met with his signing ? For the moment, I am prepared to put this down to rustiness after the summer recess. He may may come good, but equally, he may not, but I am not holding my breath at the signing of a English full back, signed from a mid table Championship club.Sloffy wrote:Just got back from the match

Thought Jarvis and Downing were head and shoulders our best players
poyet and kouyate had decent first games
whole defence looked very rusty in both halves
ravel looked for the ball constantly
we played too much long ball to lee and gordon - both did more than mccallum though
vaz te chucked himself on the floor too often
stevenage were kicking the crap out of us
Both goalkeepers looked dodgy as hell
if we've still got money to spend then striker and keeper after that

The first goal was the fault of Cresswell with a really under hit chest back to Adrian who didn't quite get to the ball before the Stevenage player was able to nick it off him,
I liked the look of Poyet.
I preferred team A although the B team got the goals.
Bit disconcerting to see this image confronting me in the ladies loo

People who were at the game are entitled to give their honest opinion about a player's performance during that game. Well all know it's a pre season friendly, especially those who could be bothered to get off their arses and go.

Hopefully claretdave will be able to insert the appropriate accents for me with his french keyboard.

For the moment, I am prepared to put it down to ring rustiness after the summer recess, so let's see how he fares week in, week out, against better opposition than Stevenage.Ludeksgloves wrote:

Just back.Dissapointing performance overall.1st half Adrian made a great save from a free kick just outside the box. Then committed a bad error allowing the ball to slip out of his hand when Cresswell had headed it back to him thus allowing the Stevenage player to roll the ball in the empty net. This error clearly affected him and he made a couple of gaffs before he was subbed at half time. Both Nolan and Reid had words with him.The fact he couldn't disregard the initial mistake and get on with his normal game concerns me.
I thought Cresswell and Poyet looked good and it was nice to see Ravel playing for us again.I was disappointed to learn that Carroll,Cole & Zarate were all unavailable.Macallum was poor and I cant see him having a future here.
2nd half saw the team change,Kouyate played well and showed promise. Our 1st goal came from goodwork down the right from Demel who delivered a perfect cross for Jarvis to head in.Then in injury time a good cross from Jarvis saw Downing rise at the far post to head in from close range. We were lucky to snatch the draw in the end.Its upfront where our problems lie and having no 1st team striker available today was always going to make it hard for us.

Just back, thought Cresswell did alright, good to see a naturally left footed player who can also hIt a pass off his right boot. Havn't seen that for a while. Noble and Morrison were tidy in midfield. Overall we were abject going forwards, first half one shot off goal and a free kick over the bar with our starting eleven. Poyet looked ok as well. If todays run out was just planned for some fitness and ball retention for the first 45, then I would hope that's the case.
As for Nolan berating Adrian, have a look at your own contribution.
Wouldn't read anything into todays match other than some fitness and match time, our new brand of attacking football is yet to be unveiled, hopefully.
