SCHALKE 04 vs WEST HAM UNITED FC
Schalke Cup
Veltins-Arena
Saturday 2nd August 2014
Kick Off 17:45 Local Time

West Ham United will head to the four-team tournament in Gelsenkirchen over the weekend of 2-3 August, where they will take on Bundesliga giants and UEFA Champions League qualifiers Schalke 04 and Spanish Primera Division side Malaga.

Malaga will get the two-day football festival kicked-off when they take on Barclays Premier League side Newcastle United at 3.30pm local time on Saturday 2 August.

Sam Allardyce's team will then take to the pitch at the 61,973-capacity stadium for a 5.30pm kick-off against Jens Keller's star-studded squad, which includes no fewer than seven players who could appear at this summer's FIFA World Cup finals - Germany pair Julian Draxler and Benedikt Howedes, Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Sead Kolasinac, Cameroon midfielder Joel Matip, Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Ghana playmaker Kevin-Prince Boateng and Japan defender Atsuto Uchida.

The Schalke 04 Cup is being played on a points basis. Winners after 90 minutes will receive three points. If a game ends in a draw after 90 minutes, it will immediately go to penalties, with the winner getting two points.
The winners of the tournament will be the team that picks up the most points from the two games.

All four games from the tournament are being broadcast live on QUEST TV Freeview Channel 37 (+1 Channel 38) SKY Channel 167 (+1 Channel 195) Virgin Media Channel 172 (+1 Channel 173)

Jens Keller’s side will face West Ham United in their first game of the Schalke 04 Cup on Saturday, with kick-off at 17:30 CEST against the Hammers. West Ham United are regarded as a grafter’s club and one rich in tradition, have one of the best academies and, like FC Schalke 04, have lifted an international trophy on one occasion. The East London side have also won the FA Cup three times. The Hammers were founded as a team from a London shipyard company in 1985 under the name Thames Ironworks FC.

In the course of immersing the club into the community, the Club was given it’s title which it’s commonly known by today – West Ham United. The two crossed hammers within the coat of arm symbolized the deep-rooted dockyard work within the community. The Hammers’ home ground is equally as rich in tradition as their formation. West Ham have played their home games at the Boleyn Ground (35,647 capacity) since 1904 – but not for much longer. The Hammers will move from Upton Park to the London Olympic Stadium in summer 2016, which can accommodate up to 80,000 fans. This made their promotion back to the Premier League in summer 2012 all the more important.

Sam Allardyce’s men are set for another campaign in the Premier League after finishing the 2013/14 campaign in a solid 13th place – even without star striker Andy Carroll for the first 20 matches due to injury. The England international, who has appeared nine times for his country, was originally loaned to the Hammers from Liverpool in summer 2012 and then made the move permanent for a 17.5 million Euro fee. Stewart Downing and Guy Demel are two other famous faces. The Ivorian plied his trade for HSV and then Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga before, making the switch to East London.

The Hammers have strengthened their team in several positions for the upcoming campaign. Diego Poyet is one new addition from nearby Charlton and there are high hopes surrounding the young midfielder. The attack has been boosted with some Argentine quality after the acquisition of Mauro Zarata, who enjoyed spells with Inter Milan and AS Roma. Aaron Cresswell is set to strengthen the left flank in the future after the home-grown player arrived from Ipswich Town. Anderlecht man Cheikhou Kouyate is another player to move to East London and he can be expected to sweep up in a defensive midfield role. West Ham also completed the signing of Enner Valencia recently. The striker scored three goals for Ecuador at the World Cup in Brazil.

One player who won’t feature any longer for the Hammers, is Joe Cole, who has moved to fellow Premier League club Aston Villa. Cole also graduated from the famous United Talent Factory earlier in his career. The ‘Academy of Football’ has produced top talents such as Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and club legend Bobby Moore. Defender Moore led West Ham to the club’s greatest triumph in 1965, when they lifted the European Cup Winners’ Cup after a 2-0 victory over TSV 1860 Munich in the final at Wembley Stadium.

VELTINS-ARENA

The site chosen for Schalke 04's new stadium is in the direct vicinity of the old Parkstadion, on an extensive piece of club owned property known as the "Berger Feld". Unfortunately, two mine shafts of the "Consolidation" and "Hugo" coal-mines run directly beneath this field at a depth of 800 m. These shafts (in use until 2000) would have caused unwanted shifts and tensions that could have compromised the structural integrity of the stadium. To avoid this, the main axis was rotated from the classic North-South arrangement to a Northeast-Southwest alignment, making the arena parallel to the mines.

The Veltins-Arena was created as a multi-functional arena of two tiers that completely surround the playing field. These allow for a league capacity of 61,524 spectators (standing and seated) and an international capacity of 53,994. For league matches, the North stand is left as standing rows (capacity: 16,307) to accommodate the Schalke 04 fans, while for international matches, these are converted to seats (capacity: 8,600). The 72 VIP lounges form a ring around the entire stadium, separating the first tier from the second tier. On the main Western grandstand, the VIP capacity is increased by a second level of lounges directly beneath the main belt.

The foundation for the stadium was created out of cast concrete and 600,000 m3 of packed slag, a waste product from the steel smelting industry. These were packed into mounds to support the four main stands, which were made out of pre-fabricated, reinforced concrete sections. Leading into the four corners of the arena are 4.50 m x 4.50 m tunnels, which serve both as access for construction and assembly, and as ventilation for the interior.

he Veltins-Arena features a Teflon-coated fiberglass canvas retractable roof, which spans the entire stadium. The roof is supported by a rectangular truss that is suspended above the field, which is in turn connected to the main building via 24 steel pylons. The center of the roof can be opened into two halves, allowing for an opened or covered stadium, depending on weather and event. In order to reduce the exterior noise of up to 105 decibels during concerts, a second layer of Teflon-coated fiberglass canvas was added over the first, creating a dampening air cushion. Hanging 25 m over the center of the pitch are four video screens, each with a surface area of 35 m2. The centrally suspended scoreboard, similar to those found inside indoor sports arenas, was the first of its kind in football stadia, and has since been copied in the Commerzbank-Arena in Frankfurt and the Esprit Arena in Düsseldorf.

TRAVEL

By car/coach
Exit 6 (Gelsenkirchen-Buer) on the A2 autobahn and Exit 17 (Gelsenkirchen-Schalke) on the A42 take you straight to the VELTINS Arena. Simply follow the VELTINS Arena signs on leaving the motorway. A total of 14,000 parking spaces are available around the ground.
A parking guidance system ushers drivers quickly and efficiently to the next available parking space on or near the Arena complex.
What to enter in your satnav
For car parks A, B, C1, C2, C3 and Kinocenter (cineplex), enter Adenauerallee.

For car parks D1, D2, D3, D4, E1 and E2, enter Willy-Brandt-Allee.

Do not use your satnav when leaving the stadium! Car park service personnel will guide you to the most convenient autobahn ramp or city route.

By public transport

KNAPPEN CARD

A new currency was created for all payment transactions inside the VELTINS Arena: the Knappe. Cash is not accepted at the stadium refreshment kiosks. The Knappe is an artificial currency that can be loaded onto a Knappen Card electronically. One Knappe is the equivalent of one euro. You can load money onto the card in five euro steps up to a maximum of 150 euros.

Advantages
The electronic currency makes for much faster service at the VELTINS Arena. If you fancy a freshly poured Veltins pils or succulent bratwurst during the half-time interval, simply go to one of the 32 refreshment stands dotted about the stadium. On making your purchase, present your Knappen Card and the equivalent value of the items you buy will be deducted from it. There is no change involved and no time-consuming counting of small and large coins.

Key information
You can get your Knappen Card from one of the dedicated mobile or stationary outlets situated on the walkways inside the VELTINS Arena. The staff there will be happy to advise should you have a question or a problem. Ahead of an event you can also acquire a Knappen Card at the S04 ServiceCenter on the club complex.

There is no need to worry about losing any money that may be left on your Knappen Card when you leave the VELTINS Arena at the end of an event. The money on your card can be exchanged for euros at the Knappen Card outlets at any time. If you are in no rush or often spend time at Schalke, you can also cash your card in at the S04 ServiceCenter on the club complex during normal business hours.

The Knappen Card remains the property of FC Schalke 04 Arena Management GmbH. It will be withdrawn from circulation as soon as the money loaded onto it has been spent in full. If the card is lost, the existing credit will be refunded only if you can quote the card number and provide of proof of acquisition. The Knappen Card will be disabled without delay if it is misused or manipulated.

When your Knappen Card is nearly empty, you can load more money onto it at one of the dedicated outlets inside the stadium.

You can use your Knappen Card at any event held at the VELTINS Arena, i.e. not just Schalke matches but also concerts etc.

TICKETS

Tickets can be purchased at the S04-ServiceCenter, on tickets-aufschalke.de or by telephone (01806 150 810 – 0.20 euros per call from a landline, max. 0.60 euros per call from a German mobile). The hotline is open from 9:00-17:00 CEST on weekdays and from 9:00-14:00 CEST on Saturdays.

PRE-SEASON

Schalke 2-1 Stoke City

FC Schalke 04 had a successful end to their training camp, beating Stoke City 2-1 in the Austrian town of Kufstein. The Royal Blues’ goals were scored by Joel Matip and Tranquillo Barnetta. Alongside a successful friendly match, in which S04 put in a dominant display, most notably in the first half, there was also another reason to be pleased: Christian Fuchs celebrated his comeback following several months out injured.
n the first real tough test of pre-season so far, S04 looked to get forward straight from the off. Sidney Sam fired a shot just wide of the upright after just seven minutes, before testing opposing goalkeeper Asmir Begovic with a placed shot a little later.
Tranquillo Barnetta also tested the Bosnia national team keeper with a shot from range, before Begovic saved superbly from Sam again. There was another close call around the 37-minute mark, with Sam involved once more. The former Leverkusen man, who was brought off shortly before the break with minor muscle problems, took a ball from Barnetta in his stride but couldn’t direct his shot on target.

The Potters, who were playing with former Hannover man Mame Diouf up front, tried to build structured attacks for long spells. However, the Premier League club were unable to create a dangerous chance – the Royal Blues were solid defensively and hardly allowed the ball to enter their own 16-yard box.

Their only notable chance came via former Bremen player Marko Arnautovic, who was denied from the penalty spot by Ralf Fährmann four minutes before the break. The Schalke number 1 saved well, getting down to his left to scoop the ball away. Arnautovic himself had been brought down by Felipe Santana to earn the spot kick.
The second half began with a good opportunity for the Potters. Stephen Ireland had the chance to shoot, but was denied at the very last by Santana’s tackle. The ball did find the back of substitute keeper Fabian Giefer’s net in the 55th minute though. The goalscorer was Bojan, who found the bottom-left corner with a side-footed finish. The Royal Blues responded quickly though in the form of Joel Matip. The Cameroonian World Cup participant got on the end of Fuchs’ corner to head in the equaliser in the 58th minute.

In the minutes that followed, Stoke’s Scottish midfielder Charlie Adam got into the Schalke area on a couple of occasions, but was unable to find a way past Jens Keller’s defence, who remained resolute. The match then dropped off a little as it was clear to see that both teams had some intensive days of training behind them. There were half-chances for youngsters Maurice Multhaup and Max Meyer as the game neared its end but neither were able to grab the winner. Schalke’s Swiss midfielder could though. A wonderful pass from Donis Avdijaj set Barnetta on his way and ‘Quillo’ found the back of the net to make it 2-1 in the 86th minute.
S04’s upcoming opponents are also English clubs. The Royal Blues will face West Ham United on Saturday, 2nd August as part of the Schalke 04 Cup, before a meeting with Newcastle United the following day. Keller’s men also have a friendly match against Tottenham Hotspur on their schedule on Saturday, 9th August. There will be a local match in between for Kevin-Prince Boateng & Co. though, as they’re set to face fellow Ruhr club VfL Bochum on Tuesday, 5th August.

One of the nices "new style football arenas" in Europe. Enjoy, all of you going.

Would like us to get a result, to put ourselves in easy, but quality of the performance is priority regarding preseason games. Hopefuly we manage to get through without any further injuries for a change.

Ricardo , thanks again for your work on these match threads .

The Veltins is a decent stadium, a little bit out from the town , I saw England play there in the WC, and I'm sure the lads going will have a good day out despite the likely defeat .

Schalke are a decent side these days , if they are anywhere near match fitness they may prove too strong for our lads .

Yes mushy.

Very much looking forward to being there for this one, but have absolutely no expectations of a win. We're going down 3-1, our goal is going to come from Kouyate.

Hmmmm, according to the Quest website:

The 2014 Schalke 04 Cup is an upcoming two-day pre-season men's football friendly tournament hosted by German Bundesliga club Schalke and held at the Veltins-Arena, the club's home ground.

Quest will be showing all the matches LIVE! The line-up is as follows...

Malaga v Newcastle - 02 August - 2:15 pm

Schalke v West Ham - 02 August - 4:45 pm

Malaga v West Ham - 03 August - 2:15 pm

Schalke v Newcastle - 03 August - 4:45 pm

I am assuming Quest are quoting German times, cos if Germany is an hour ahead of us and the game starts at 17:30 their time and 16:30 our time, can anyone else see a problem?

Just checked the website and there's something in German about the kick-off time being changed... so the later time might well be right!
Which in my pidgin German means the kick-offs are now 3:30 and 5:45 local time - any German speakers able to confirm that?

Got this from the Newcastle website,

The organisers have now confirmed a slight alteration to kick-off times on both days as follows:

Sat 02.08.2014 Malaga v Newcastle 3.30pm
Sat 02.08.2014 Schalke 04 v West Ham 5.45pm
Sun 03.08.2014 Malaga v West Ham 3.30pm
Sun 03.08.2014 Schalke 04 v Newcastle 5.45pm

(Times above are local to Germany)

The change is to delay kickoff in the second game each day by 15 minutes - presumably to cater for a possible penalty shootout to decide the earlier game each day.

So I think your German is up to scratch BMU

A bit sad I know but I shall be watching the game live on Quest channel.

Am currently on a pretty strict diet for health reasons so I shall be eating a virtual pie & mash and consuming vast quantities of virtual beer.

They've probably taken Kouyate to the vet to have him put down going by how quiet they've been about his injury. :)

Honestly don't know anything about his fitness. Nor Tomkins'or Demel's.
