Re: West Ham United v Newcastle United: Match Thread
A good win, but it felt dirty.
Wrote a really long post but the browser on my smartphone crashed, bloody technology eh, it would of probably bored you all to tears anyway.
Well played to all involved, I will take wins like that all day long with a lot of our key players being out injured.
Thought it was very scrappy in the 1st half, a lot of stuff in he air. Looked a lot better in the 2nd and pressed for a result.
Not sure why Jarvis started over Zarate. Zarate definitely tries to orchestrate things when he's on the pitch. But like others have said, maybe a bit too much at times. But I think he's shown enough to warrant a start.
Very much looking forward to getting Sak / Valencia / Song back.
On to the next one.

Forgot to mention Aaron Cresswell's finish. For a left back, it was pretty special.
Well played sir.
Not sure about the goal celebration though. Looked like he put his hand over his eye like an eye patch. Although I think it was more spontaneous than pre-planned. Maybe he'll have to let us in on it.
Hope the fella who was being attended to by the paramedics in the AL is ok.

21 points on the board, as of 29th November compared to 21 points as of 29th January last season - a measure of how far we have come since then, exemplfied by the way yesterday's result was ground out against a confident, in-form team while we still had key personnel injured and suspended. These really are exciting times gentlemen
Re: West Ham United v Newcastle United: Match Thread
Two thirds left and just need another 21 points to survive!
Amalfitano and Tomka were our best players of the day. Zarate should have much more gametime.
Carroll fought well, but surely he did not win all his headers as some here suggest. Thought the barcodes defence kept him frustrated even in the air.

Very satisfying win not the greatest of football but without messer's song ,sakho ,valancia it was good enough.Thought collins was immense again. I've been working in this posh law firm and a guy there kept on how he followed Newcastle bug had never seen them so I got him in yesterday (alpari lower) told him to behave which he did, to the point of him singing bubbles.Afterwards he said he loved it and wants to come to another game, a convert !

What a fantastic through-ball from Kouyate , he fooled the Newcastle keeper who thought he was about to shoot - by then it was too late as Cresswell produced ice-cold finishing that Di Canio would have been proud of .

Thought Zarate made a very decent impact but didn't look fit. Made sense that he came from the bench. Some seem to be glossing over the fact he had a muscle injury earlier in the season and Everton was his first minutes back.
Blowing out of his arse at the end.
Tomkins oustanding. Collins started very shaky but did okay as the game went on. Both fullbacks excellent. Noble solid if unspectacular. I actually thought Amalfitano had his worst game for us first half but like others got better as the game went on.
Kouyate gave us some much needed physicality, an excellent performance just back from injury.
Jarvis was a willing runner first half, better than Downing who through no lack of application had an absolute mare yesterday imo. Just one of those days.
Carroll got man of the match and Tomkins aside he was head and shoulders above the rest. Absolute monster. Won everything in the air, composed and excellent on the deck and his ability to almost play a reverse pass with a flick on is incredible. Zarate worked well off him and when both fit they'll be a superb option for the two strikers.
Solid if unspectacular first half against a side very much in form. Don't buy that it was anything like last season other than Collins who will hoof whenever he plays. Much better second half.
We won't play incredibly well every game. But we seem to ve playing well more often than we aren't. Why can't some just enjoy that. Take it all in and put things into perspective. I fear some are brainwashed listening to the xomments yesterday on Nolan etc. Nolan came on and made 2 crucial tackles, one which lead to a counter attack after a great ball. He's a superb option from the bench and has been a fantastic captain for 3 and a bit years.
The hostility towards the bloke from too many than a minority of our supporters is disgusting.

This win gave me as much pleasure as any we have had this season, but I want to see us get back to winning ways on the road again, starting with West Brom on Tuesday. Away from home, so far our only wins have come at Crystal Palace and at Burnley, who I now would expect us to beat.

West Brom's not going to be as easy as some are making out I think.
They're a tidy little outfit this season. Berahino's been in good form up until the last couple of weeks and Arsenal only nicked a win up there yesterday.
I'd take a point. Although a win would be f*cking A.

100% correct. We would have lost this game a few seasons back. Win scruffy when you have to!Carroll got man of the match and Tomkins aside he was head and shoulders above the rest. Absolute monster. No it's not, neither will Sunderland. Nowadays, you have to play well to get wins anywhere, home or away, but if we are to aspire to lofty heights this season, that is what you have to do, nick wins at these places, even if you don't play that well on the daygiantsteps wrote:West Brom's not going to be as easy as some are making out I think.

Re: West Ham United v Newcastle United: Match Thread
Poor game, suffered after a night of no sleep and a monumental hangover which didn't help. Newcastle created the better chances but looked a bit toothless. We get lucky and that was that.,
Back 4 solid, Kouyate strong. Rest a bit average until Zarate came on
The trouble with Carroll is he just does not look like scoring. He has a poor instinct for a striker in terms of making the right runs and getting in scoring positions. Just too slow and ponderous around the opposition box. That is reflected in his goal scoring record. Yes, he won some headers on the half way line, but we all know he can do that. That is his bread and butter. Not enough for me.. Sakho may not be the greatest player In the world, but seems to be able to sniff out a chance and get himself in positions. Looking forward to having him and Valencia back to stretch defences.
Jarvis - no more please. Would prefer Vaz Te

We have some real talented youngsters now whose heads don't go down and keep fighting, not sure who picked the man of the match? but then that seems part of the course. Cresswell, Jenkinson are looking superb, no wonder Arsenal want Carl back, one top player back next weekend, sooner the second is back the better, we need strikers who can take chances! Both sides cancelled themselves out at times, but we kept going, not sure why Nolan had to even make an appearance?

I think it's far to say Carroll's not a natural finisher. Great in the air, good physical presence. Good at winning the ball and knocking it on. But when it comes to putting it away, he doesn't do the business nearly enough. His pace is not fantastic either. Would he work in a different system? I don't know. But we're not really going to see if he can I think, Rodgers seem to think he couldn't.
What he is though is a great option when we're in positions like this with players injured or looking to set-up differently or indeed change the system during a game. He works like a cart-horse and always gives 100%.
Re: Puff. Yeah, true. It's good that we've got the luxury to be able to do it where as previous seasons have been just win ugly or nothing.
