we played pretty well, not sure we deserved to win but certainly deserved the draw.

The subs really were poor though. I can understand the Cole for Valencia switch as obviously Enner is going to play on Saturday but the trouble was as soon as Carlton came on we went pretty much 9-0-1, and completely nullified any threat we had and gave them the initiative
Taking Jarvis off was also understandable as he was pretty ineffective but I would have liked to have seen Vaz Te come on rather than move Downing wide. Allardyce wanted to defend for 20 minutes but we could have dropped Amalfitano back into a more central position and played Vaz Te just behind Carlton to at least keep some forward momentum.
The last substitution was completely baffling and cost us the game. Why move Jenkinson to a position he is not suited and bring on O'Brien? Amalfitano is a scurrier and a harrier. Should have kept him on as he puts himself about a bit. Taking him off meant we basically said to Everton 'come at us for 10 minutes'. Plus, if either of the defensive subs should have come on, it should have been Demel as he is much much better at defending than O'Brien

I'd sell Carroll and give Everton £13 million on top for Lukaku without a moment's pause for breath.

The subs ...

Valencia off for Cole - Valencia run his heart out, did well but make sense to bring on Cole, fresh legs, big striker to win headers and chase things.

Jarvis off for Poyet - don't see the problem. were defending a 1-0 lead, tight game, defensive mid for attacking winger, Jarvis had a good game but not type player you want later stages that type of game.

Amilfitano off for O'brian - Everton were getting joy down the left - made sense to bring on a right back, move Jenkinson bit further up who can attack but also has defensive attributes, Amilfitano ran out of steam a little.

..If Lukaku dragged his shot wide in the last minute, none of the above would have been criticised.

If Joey O Brien ever goes knocking on Sams door asking why he isn't in the team, I'd suggest to him he shows Joey that "tackle" prior to Everton scoring. :thdn:

The Cole sub was alright if he had someone near him, quite a few times he won headers with no one to get on the end, where was heading the ball to, he had no chance, there was once we played a long ball and Carlton basically just had to head it as far as he could down the pitch as he had no options.

Disappointing, but so typical of how we used to be, conceding so late, but a great goal by a real striker! a few players seemed lost last night, even Aaron Carswell who I rate so highly was not on song, same with Jenkinson? Nolan, well he is just a waste of space now and not even worth keeping for impact from the bench, same with O'Brien, free with money off the wage bill with both, just wish we could sell Carroll this window and bring in a real all round striker, the sooner the African Cup finishes the better, and hopefully Sam will return to the formation that got us to the position we currently are in the Premiership!

Talk about trying to put a positive spin on bad decisions. Did you actually see how the game went in the last 15 mins?

1) Cole posed no threat at all. He just ended up isolated. We never looked like scoring once he came on.
2) Jarvis for Poyet not a problem, but shifting Downing wide to accomodate it was. Our midfield lost all creative spark and lost control of the game.
3) "Amilfitano ran out of steam a little" as opposed to Nolan who was fill of running? You shift a full back (who is having a good game) out his position, to replace a winger, who is having a good game, in order to bring on a player who didn't do very well. And this makes sense.

Lukaku didn't miss so that is irrelevant.

Its the nature of the game... 1-0 , 15 to go, Everton had nothing to lose and went for it, happens every week in the Prem for all clubs... if it was us 1-0 down we'd have chucked another striker on and same thing could of happened. its just football.

A match thread for a game Carroll was nowhere near and you still manage to get your regular pop in.

I'd actually admire your tenacity if you wasn't such a boring and predictable bellend.

We played pretty well. Certainly the better team against a real bogey team for us. Nearly won it.

Yet from most of the comments you'd think we'd drawn at Darlington.

When will some people get a bit of perspective? But still, if you want to moan at everything & pick holes constantly then enjoy yourselves.

Yeah, from some of the press coverage you'd think we were the ones who were lucky to get a draw. A lot of Martinez lovers out there I think. They should try reading some of the Toffees fan's forums!

to be fair we didn't really look like scoring with Valencia on the pitch did we, as an attacking threat?

Lukaku 76 games and 32 goals (at Chelsea, WBA and Everton) before Everton signed him permanently (1 in 2.3) - 28m

Think you get what you pay for.

I enjoyed last nights game , a decent cup tie with an ok attendance for a televised match .

What it confirmed to me more than ever is that Mark Noble is the best footballer at our club and the players to select everyone else around .

We are so much better as a team with him in it than without him it's almost funny .

For my money now, plan A doesn't feature Carroll or the skipper , and as for plan B I would use Morgan in the Nolan role .

Plan A features Valencia and Sakho - neither of whom I am convinced about but I certainly prefer watching them than Carroll .To be clear , I rate Carroll ,but he needs to remodel his game to play facing the opposition goal rather than with his back to it .

But Noble was excellent yesterday .

A nice accompaniment to the shockingly biased commentary on BT Sport then...

After failing to score the second the inevitable happened.
