None of it matters anyway as we're gonna win the 2nd leg 2-1 with goals from Samuelson and Maiga.
Re: West Ham United v. FC Astra - Match Thread
Don't know if anyone has already said this but Elliot lee has posted on his Instagram about being happy to be back in training after a knock so that's the reason he hasn't been in the squad recently. We'll probably have him starting upfront against Astra next week

I completely agree with Claret Parrot (not about the specific posts as I haven't bothered reading them) but about the way we played. There was some excellent play that was really exciting to watch. Noble played a few great long cross-pitch passes to Cresswell in the first half and Payet was just a joy to watch. Oxford is amazing for a 16 year old, Burke didn't look out of place and Kouyate dominated in the middle. Everyone always seemed to be looking for a short or intelligent pass rather than lumping it up front. Even Collins was bringing it out from the back. It's the first game I've seen at the Boleyn for over 10 years and thoroughly enjoyed it (apart from the score). One thing about the ref though - the comment about Payet being taken out and their player getting away with it was absolutely right. The ref did us no favours and naturally led to a less than complimentary chant from the Bobby Moore Lower.

It made me laugh is all. The sheer abuse followed by the sheer specificity of the way to fix a problem.rare as rockinghorse shat wrote: What's wrong with that statement?

Ok, 4-2-31, 4-3-3, or a diamond 4-4-2. Any of them are fine and I'd fancy Zarate to start with current options available in any.the pink palermo wrote:
Again, why would I want to assume that ? Why would I go with that idea ? Why, if I felt a player isn't good enough would I stay welded to a shape or system that meant deploying sub standard options ?
Isn't that rigidity of thought process exactly what Sam was caned for on here ?
Tell me though , stick up your starting XI against the gunners , line up and shape please, I'm interested .
Against arsenal,
Adrian
Cresswell
Reid
Tomkins
RB whoever is deemed best backup to Jenks
Midfield three of Noble, Kouyate and Oxford/Poyet
Forward three of Payet, Zarate and Sakho.
What about yours?

I would love us to stay in as long as possible and go onto win it.
But the schedule is a joke.

We should play to win ALL matches. Without that belief, we will always be an average side content with a mid-table finish.
I am a firm believer that this game is about teamwork and not money. If the team spirit is there, how much you cost doesn't matter. Look at Bournemouth last season.
The media have already decided that we are playing 'title contenders Arsenal' in the first game of the season. WTF. A ball hasn't even been kicked yet. I still believe all clubs have an even chance on day 1.
As for pros not being able to play 2 games in 4 days, just look at the Easter programme of 3 games in 4 days of the 60s and 70s. They were the league deciders (top and bottom) when everything could change. They should bring it back.

or good old fashioned 4-4-2 with split strikers

Joey-----------Collins-----Ogbonna-------Cresswell
Oxford---------Noble--------Poyet---------Kouyate
----------Sakho-------------------------Payet------------
Or 4-4-1-1 , as above but with Payet sitting behind Sakho
or 4-3-3 -( not my preferred option given the personnel and opposition )
with the front six being
-------------Oxford------------Noble----------Kouyate
-----------Payet---------------Sakho----------------Jarvis
Basically against Arsena, at the Emirates, l Zarate ain't getting anywhere near my starting line up .Frankly I'm reluctant to play Payet , a much better player in my eyes .

I really hope the owners and Slav don't feel like they've seen enough with the sending offs, packed schedule and injures. Would really like us to progress further in this..

Pinky - I was & still am one of those sceptical about Zarate's return & worth
But last night, especially from the goal onwards, he looked keener, leaner & more enthusiastic than he has since early last season. He linked up well with Maiga, Payet & Kouyate & hustled & hurried their midfield.
I believe in giving all of this lot a clean slate under Slav & so far Zarate has shown no more or less than Jarvis, Nolan, Amalfitano etc in that area of the pitch - in fact he's shown more than a few of them
Your disclaimers & scrutiny of his performances after every game so far have read like a few on here about Allardyce or Nolan over the last couple of years, no matter the result, no matter the performance, polarised, frustratingly steadfast & proud of it.
"His goal was fortunate"? Do give over. He's trying in claret & blue. Give him a chance eh mate

Re: West Ham United v. FC Astra - Match Thread
Just watched the highlights, and I'm now even more annoyed with Collins. The 2nd yellow was a stupid foul that gave the player a chance to go down and the ref to give a yellow, when there was a player covering. But the first one was worse - a cynical clattering when again the player was running straight into cover. Bloody stupid.
As I thought at the time, Maiga's "penalty" was a pretty poor dive.

After watching the highlights I don't really blame Collins anymore.
He shouldn't have put his hands up towards the Astra player but that was as soft a yellow as you'll ever see.

One moment, last night, Zarate looked up, saw the ball coming to him in space and played it instinctively to the onrushing midfielder into space, without either looking surprised, or even breaking sweat.
The same move would have earned Andy Sicknote a standing ovation.
The squad needs to gel.
At this nascent stage, Mauro Zarate fronts the reliable 'Leon index'.
He's not a top 4 player, but something tells me, he'll do for our squad, if it gave him a chance.

Didn't go to the game but the reports seem promising, especially after the reports from the Norwich game In the last 20 mins.
Gutted hugely if Valencia is out for the season, really upset.
In an odd way last night proves why I love west ham, totally unpredictable and I would never change that. It's a massive roller-coaster this club and I bloody love it. This competition is great and I want to carry on in it.
