Crystal Palace 0-1 West Ham Utd (15/10/16)

Post by The Green Man »

This is now a must-win, as is the game vs Sunderland the following week.

It's clear that the line up we've been using hasn't worked at all in keeping us organised off the ball until today.
We've seen teams pass through us and cut us open on the counter over and over again. The answer to stopping this seems to be 4-5-1 and in particular deploying Obiang, who regardless of thoughts on his ability has the positional sense to cover his full backs and screen the back four.

The high press last season we employed seems to have been ditched in favour of keeping some semblance of shape which makes perfect sense considering the goals we've been conceding. With 3 of our 4 full backs now out of action for the forseeable future, what do we think is the line up we should be going with into our next few games and who needs to be picked/dropped?

For me I think Antonio showed enough willing to run the channels and make space for others that he should be kept up top for the next game, unless Carroll or Sakho are available. Zaza looks like he's alien to the lone striker role, but both are too attacking to start together. Zaza should come on for a 4-4-2 if we're chasing the game but playing him up top on his own has not worked in any of the games we've played thus far.

Feghouli also has looked a more willing worker than Tore and stronger on the ball in the small glimpses we've seen of him. I'm still confused as to Tore's inclusion vs Boro over him as he hasn't shown anything close to what we've been told he's capable of and looks far too lightweight for this league.

Finally, Adrian has looked more and more susceptible to flapping and has definitely struggled in the past few games which has transmitted to the defenders in front of him, twice punching when unnecessary and being slow off his line, had 'Boro's strikers had better touches we could have conceded another couple of poor goals today. I think Raldolph is more than deserving of a start.

-----------------Antonio-------------------
Payet---------------------------Feghouli
-----------------------------------------------
-----------Lanzini------Kouyate----------
-------------------Obiang------------------
----------------------------------------------
Ogbonna------------------------Arbeloa

Thoughts?

We said that about the Southampton game. And Middlesbrough. It aint gona happen mate. Yesterday it became apparant that the problem is actuallly very simple......We don't have enough quality on the pitch. All the hard work in the World won't change that. We 'nicked' a lot of results last year but have been found out this year.

Palace will demolish us. And they'll outsing us as well. We've got nothing left.

Adrian was shaky yet again yesterday. Tore was sh*t, as always

Antonio up top will be more suited away from home so I'd stick with it personally. I'd also have Noble out for Lanzini. Was a tough one between Noble and Kouyate but Kouyate for me brings slightly more to the table

We need Payet to start winning us games.

I believe we need Sakho in the team as well.

I'd go with this too - and I think we'd have won if we'd have started with this yesterday. The only one I'm not sure about is Kouyate, but then again I'm not sure about Noble either. I'd be tempted to give Fernandes a game. If Cullen hadn't have been out on loan, I think I'd have given him his chance in the first team by now.

I'd leave Noble in and take Kouyate out.

Antonio was way better than Zaza or Calleri so yes he stays put, no brainer.

Tore was awful so yes Feghouli in, another no brainer.

Lanzini in for Kouyate or Noble who are both off form, I'd leave Kouyate out.

Adrian looks extremely wobbly so yes Randolph in.

Looks like Ogbonnas got LB until Aaron Cresswells back, seems a better option to Arbeloa LB Nordtveit RB

Noble and Adrian to be put on bench. Obiang MUST start. Antonio up top if no Carroll or Sakho. None of our loan players anywhere near the squad.... Please

No idea what the score will be but we need to try and win it. Get Lanzini in for Noble or Kouyate.
100% certain Benteke will score

Palace are a much better team than Boro.

A crushing defeat awaits. Payet can't carry all threat on his shoulders and we are still leaving our back four too exposed.

This could be embarrassing palace have been scoring for fun lately. I'd drop Adrian I think he needs a break give him a week to get his head clear and take the pressure off him a little. I'd also start fletcher up top he's hungry and frankly, better than the alternatives. Hopefully cresswell is back we've missed him dearly.
I might be deluding myself but if Slav picks the right team I think we can win 1-2 however if he persists with zaza and tore then I can see anything past palace win to nil - it's just a question of how much by.

Randolph

Arbeloa Reid Collins Ogbonna

Antonio(C) Obiang Kouyate Lanzini

Payet

Zaza

I'd keep it reasonably simple, 4-5-1 with Payet as an attacking midfielder sitting in the hole and having a bit of a free role, I can't imagine Cresswell will be fit enough to start so gone with Ogbonna at left back, think Nobes needs a rest, finally think Antonio would make a great captain, he's by far and away our best performer this season and deserves to lead the team.

Oh and Zaza is gonna score sooner or later!

They have a strike force. I think they'll win 2-1.

Two fit full backs, Arbeloa and Westley, both of them right backs, against a side that like to get it out wide and ping crosses in, Slaven is going to have to get this tactically spot on, or thereabouts, or this will be another game where we ship 4.

Tight on Benteke, someone needs to breathing down the back if his neck all game and roughing him up the second the ball is near him.

The optimist in me says 1-1 or nick a 2-1, the realist in me says 3-1 defeat and a poorly put together statement released by the club hours later.
