This time we could have won, but Slav decided to hand the initiative to Stoke. We went from the only team creating chances, to a team hanging on and creating nothing, simply because of the subs Slav made.

Stoke had come back in to the game applying the pressure on us before Slav subbed the Strikers off and felt we needed to make sure of a valuable point under the circumstances rather than risk losing coming away with nothing after all the hard work. The only thing I would have done differently would have brought on Fletcher for Calleri but that's being picky.

I'm more than content with how he dealt with the the entire game as we had plenty of chances to score away from home before they got subbed. Last season against Stoke after bringing on Strikers, we ended up losing which would have played on the managers mind so perfectly understandable when we ain't mathematically safe yet.

If we had drawn that match, it would not have changed anything in terms of our finishing position, we needed to win to finish 6th - that's why Slav went for it that day with the score at 1-1. The fact we ended up losing a late header from a corner was neither here nor there in terms of lessons to be learned, or a potential traumatizing effect on Slav.

Anyway today what I was hoping was not for Slav to go super attacking, just to at least bring on like-for-likes to keep our attacking threat. Do you disagree that our attacking threat was completely eliminated by the subs? Or that Stoke were more on top after Slav's subs than before them?

I wasn't aware of this clause.
If your correct in assuming that the instruction is not to play him, it alludes to cowardice.
Obviously he may not come good, but when there's £2m per League place up for grabs (and the other striking option doesn't seem up to it) you have to roll the dice, shirley.

Why put him on the bench then?

Slavin Bilic is Sam Allardyce and I claim my £5.

Respect the point, respect the point, respect the point.

We were pretty comfortable and had the better chances in an entertaining first half. It had the flair of Lanzini, Masuaka and Shaqiri. Pleasantly, there was a lot of skill shown from all of these and they were a pleasure to watch.

Unfortunately the chance of the half fell to the player least likely to make use of it – Calleri. Maybe he’s trying too hard to fit in with the others? Who knows, but when eventually a chance does fall in the six yard box, a careful left foot side foot would normally do. But no, a man who doesn’t know when to run, where to run, what pass to play, where his teammates are, tries a rabona when the goal is begging! Bilic seems impressed with him though.

The second half began with the first of three incredibly baffling substitutions. Maybe Arthur was injured – I haven’t read the reports. But if our first half was moulded by the two most likely to create something, Lanzini and Masuaka, the second was shaped by the exclusion of one and the switching of the other into harmless territory.

Three incredibly baffling substitutions. I just can’t work out the withdrawal of the front two and the pushing forward of little Lanzini up alongside the invisible Snoddy to close the game out. The substitutions did show though, the massive gap currently between Arthur and the out of touch Cresswell.

I revise my declaration – Slavin Bilic is Roy Hodgson and I claim my £5.

Calleri wasn't that bad. We've had worse strikers.

And we haven't seen much of Fletcher, so it's difficult to form an opinion.

But, based on the little that I have seen, Fletcher is a lot better than Calleri.

But what do I know...?

We finished the game with Lanzini up front by the look of it.

Kouyate man of the match for me. Seemed to enjoy himself and made some great bursts forward.

Enjoyed watching Reid, Masuaku and Kouyate today.

Masuaku has very quick feet and superb close control. Suspect he could play anywhere in midfield for us and do a great job.

Calleri = John effin Radford.

No complaints about Ayew - tried his absolute best to nick a win for us.

MoTM probably Butland. Did very well - enjoyed watching him play a great game. Keeps up with that stuff and he should be a shoe-in for the England spot.

Disappointed not to see Collins strangle or choke Shawcross - not saying it didn't happen but the wonders of space telly means that I'm forced to watch the action on the ball. I miss all the juicy off-the-ball goings-on. Maybe next season.

Going to Stoke away for a 0-0 it's what dreams are made of. I did enjoy the old police escort back to the station on the shuttle bus though - especially as it got in just as the train did, saving me an hours wait.

Thought Adrian did well, but Reid, Masuaku, Kouyate, and Lanzini were superb. Nordtveit also broke up play well and generally looks for a forward pass which is nice. Disappointed as most were to see Ayew taken off (especially leaving Calleri on the pitch - more on him shortly) as I thought he looked most likely to nick a goal for us, I also thought we lost all shape with Noble replacing him being very static. Finally when Calleri went off, we made it clear we were happy with a point, I think Snodgrass touched the ball a handful of occasions and offered nothing. I'm a fan of Slav but felt he got it wrong with those 2 decisions yesterday - that said a point away at Stoke and where we are isn't a bad thing.

So onto Calleri... If there is anybody on here who thinks he is a premiership striker, I'd love to hear the reasoning. I'll give him some credit, at times he holds the ball up or gets in good positions, but he can't finish to save his life (watch him in the warm up to see this), and there are times where he walks back to get on side which causes us to have no outlet, and whilst I'm on that point, when he was offside with Lanzini's pass in the 2nd half, that was inexcusable. I feel for him and Slav as he shouldn't be the one we rely on. However he won't be here next year and Fletcher probably will, so why not give him game time - look at what happened when Tottenham did that with Harry Kane.

Why didn't he put fletcher on.

We could all see it but Slav couldn't.

Substitutions were wrong

Bilic played the safety cards, bring on Noble and Snodgrass rather than Fletcher and perhaps Feghouli to win what was a winnable game.

Noble was ***** when he came on, no invention as always. Snodders did ok but could have played an earlier ball to Kouyate than he did.

This was damage limitation for Bilic I reckon - respect the point.

we can now hopefully go out and **** up the Spurs season and also **** up the bin dippers too.

How does it see us completely safe ?

The point gained in isolation makes no difference if Swansea should win 3 from 4 and we don't get another point. We are no safer now than we were Friday night.

My question with Calleri is what type of striker is he ?

Fox in the box ? NO

Lightning fast using his pace to unsettle defenders ? NO

Target man? NO

Anyone got any idea past the obvious (not very good) answer ??

From the little I saw on the Sky highlights -

The three centre halves all played well , Reid especially - Adrian looked back to his old very capable self saving well from Arnautovic [ who really should have gone for the diving header from what was a pinpoint cross from Shaqiri ] and Berahino . Adrian is more than just a goalkeeper though , he's a presence and an entertainer , I really hope he's with us next season - if he isn't then break the bank to sign Jack Butland [ if only we'd signed that other Stoke goalkeeper all those years ago ] - and if Aaron Cresswell does decide that grass is greener elsewhere then it's reassuring knowing we have a more than capable replacement in Masuaku .
Kouyate made going past players look easy with that stride of his , another I hope is still with us - such a versatile player but let's make use of his skills more , he's a natural box to box .
Skilful as Ayew is he should be looking up more and finding his man a lot better with his passing than he is at present , still , he's finding his feet at West Ham and will be an asset with a better partner up front [ Defoe or Sturridge ? ] and could have scored on two occasions , one a brilliant overhead kick the other bringing a great save from man of the match , Jack Butland .
It tells you that Bilic is doing something right when the Man of the Match is the opposition goalkeeper .

Hello people we are NOT safe yet , granted Swansea losing today will help but why is there so much complacency from some on here , we could and should have won Butland was superb Adrian largely redundant .

I'm normally quite critical of our shooting, but judging from the brief highlights on MOTD, I counted 6 shots on target, we'll OK 5 shots and one header from Lanzini and all but Calleri's tame efforts were decent attempts.Stoke looked pitiful and of the two managers, I think Hughes should be the more worried

It's been four years since we've won at Stoke , it's a notoriously difficult place to go and after losing so many games by the odd goal [ or worse ] then yes most certainly respect the point - another way of looking at things is we're now unbeaten in 4 matches - not having a go at you in particular , CF but I'm getting fed up of everyone's negativity towards our club - let's look at the positivities for a change , they do exist .
We remain unbeaten since the Arsenal match - Adrian has given the defence and everyone else more confidence , Masuaku and Nordtveit are improving in leaps and bounds , Ayew is finding his feet and is looking good , Kouyate looked magnificent yesterday and Calleri isn't really as bad as many make out he is .
And as for the substitutions , I thought Slaven got them spot on .
