Seems to me like it would be footballing malpractice to go with anything other than three centre-halves. And I can't see Zabaleta being benched so it would be more like one of Steve Bruce's '3 at the back' (i.e. 5). Although the fact Masuaku plays far more like a winger than even your average attacking fullback should help.

There's enough attacking talent to nick a goal from nothing if we can keep it tight until quite late - Hernanez, Ayew, Lanzini, and Arnautovic are all capable of a moment of quality.

Will require Noble in particular to do some Herculean work in the middle of the park - of the type we haven't seen for quite some time from him - to get it from the massed ranks at the back to the 4 mentioned up front. Being able to shuttle it quickly and successfully through those channels often enough is the obvious weak link in the plan, but it's one that looks worth gambling on when weighed up against almost any recent game where we only played with 2 central defenders and Kouyate isn't present.

Think we will get a bit of a hiding if we go into any game against top 6 opposition with a rapidly declining Noble as the fulcrum of the midfield

It's him, Rice or Fernandes for one deep central midfield spot at the moment unless Bilic gets properly experimental, with emphasis on the mental.

It's actually not a bad time to have to play them.

No-one expects us to get anything at all so if they have an off day we could maybe sneak a draw.

Not a game to be starting kids though, I'd expect to see at least two subs being shop window run outs for the likes of Snodgrass and Sakho.

This will be one of those typical Mourinho games where he wins 2-0 playing average.

If they line up with a front 4 of

Martial Pogba rashford
Lukaku

Their pace "might" be an issue

I think the two Manchester teams are going to be placed 1st and 2nd this season, so playing Utd first game might might be a very good time to play them; before they've hit a groove and aren't all playing in sync. Sneak a 1-0 perhaps?

So says my eternally optimistic self, wearing my claret and glasses in my full kit.

Honestly, taking a point would be a fantastic result. But if we play well, and don't get completely roasted that would be a decent outcome too.

That's how I see it too.

Bilic will set us up super defensive, and Mourinho is always happy with a solid 2-0. It won't be a massacre but we will lose.

If Reid and Lanzini aren't fit, we're ****ed!

I'd go Byram - Fonte - Reid - Ogbonna - Cresswell across the back, Noble and Obiang holding, and Lanzini, Arnie and Hernandez up front. Can't say I give a **** who's in goal.

If we're 2-0 down after half an hour, bring Reid, Lanzini and Hernandez off and replace them with people we can afford to have injured.

Hart

Zab - Reid - Ogbonna - Cresswell
Obiang - Noble
Ayew - Lanzini - Arnautovic
Hernandez

If Cresswell not 100% then Arthur
If Lanzini not fit i'd then play 3 cb's with Fonte coming in to line up to play 3-4-3
If Reid not fit, bring in both Fonte and Collins to play three cb's - again 3-4-3
Start with Noble and Hernandez, maybe on 60 mins replace with Rice and Martinez

A back 4 of Zab, Fonte, Ogbonna and Masuaku will get battered!

Tough start this. We need to learn how to pass the ball for more than 2 passes at a time in midfield if we are to stand any chance against teams like this lot away from home. 5 at the back is certainly not the answer.

Hart
Byram Reid Ogbonna Masuaku
Noble Rice Obiang
Lanzini Arnautovic
Hernandez

Subs: Adrian, Zabaleta, Cresswell, Fernandes, Snodgrass, Ayew & Martinez

Agreed. I just think Byram deserves a starting spot as he has been very good in pre season from what I have seen. Also my line up will basically be a 5 at the back as Rice is just going to sit in front of the back 4.

Zabaleta played a few games as DM for city. Looked better than our options other than Pedro. Stick Byram as rwb and play 3 centre backs.

I think we'll be bullied out of this one. The spine of their team looks much stronger than ours. Bailly, Lindelof, Matic, Pogba and Lukaku could and probably should out-muscle most teams in the league though.
