I like that team, with the exception of arguably the most important positions on the field, the centre of our defence. We are under strength there and this must be addressed. Personally, I think we should have looked to upgrade on Reid last summer

I think Hernandez needs players close to him. Its too obvious what were doing when he is isolated like that. I would use a kind of diamond to support him.

So Antonio the only player to return for this game according to Bilic and Carvalho still training with his club today... so I reckon

---------------------------- Hart ------------------------------
---------------- Reid --- Collins --- Ogbonna ------------
Zabaleta ------------------------------------------ Cresswell
------------------- Noble ----- Rice ----------------------
---------- Antonio-------------------- Arnautovic--------
---------------------- Hernandez --------------------------

Although not sure Obiang will be dropped

theres no way Carvalho will start if we sign him.

We're West Ham, for some reason we sign people and don't start them for about 3 weeks

I would play Fonte instead of Ginger Pele. He would want to show up for this one.
Also Pedro instead of either Nobes or Rice.
If Arnie doesn't back track we may get caned on the left hand side of the park.

The departure of the uber-dross is revealing the merely-dross judging by some of these selections. Image

Our central midfield would struggle in the championship in the absence of Lanzini and Kouyate.

Hart

Zab Reid Oggy Cress

Noble Obiang

Antonio Ayew Arnie

Chich

Ayew and Obiang need to turn up this week - if not hook them with Rice and Sakho. Based on only Antonio returning.

Key for us this season is getting the most out of Chich which means playing with someone close to him, so either a proper 4-3-3 where the 2 wide forwards play as forwards, not extra midfielders, or play with 2 upfront (or one just off Chich) in which case I would consider bringing back the old diamond formation in Midfield.

Given who is available I would go with either:

----------------Hart
Zabba---Reid---Fonte---Creswell
----Noble---Obiang---Rice
---Antonio---Chich---Arnie

Or

----------------Hart
Zabba---Reid---Fonte---Creswell
----------------Rice
-------Obiang----Noble
--------------Arnie
---------Chich---Ayew

Fwiw, the raw stats from the weekend don't paint a picture of a one-sided massacre.

45% possession (more than what we often score at home), 80% passing success, 9 shots, dispossessed fewer times than they were (although obviously the most important one was the one that led to the opener). These aren't meant to suggest we played well - we stunk the joint out - just that the underlying performance has something to build on once a few players return and the opposition not quite so strong. Perhaps the opening 40 minutes - where we didn't remotely threaten but comfortably competed - tell more of a story than the collapse in the final 5 mins.

The telling one is aerial battles - we were walloped there by 23 to 13. That used to be us dominating that stat, against nearly anyone, especially when on defence for so much of a game. Probably reinforces the theory that the XI was a bit willowy, particularly against that basketball team.

...and that bringing on Collins into a back three might have helped.

He does like a header, after all.

A point away to a decent side in the Prem after last weeks debacle would be a start. Get Collins in to start winning some headers and tackles after powder puff Sunday.

A good point. I am looking forward to seeing this one with my Saints supporting cousin.

i think it is essential we get a point this weekend, especially with a goal

Southampton will score after their barren run, not b/c they are playing us, simply because the law of averages says they will

1-1, and a half decent performance will be a decent outcome
