I think we'll do well in this. We were playing a very strong Manchester Utd side with one of the best forwards in the world playing against us.

If we had have played a "lesser" team yesterday, we would have won I believe.

Saints aren't going to be as strong as Man Utd, but we need to turn up and play with some belief.

MadMart wrote: is the correct answer - last 6 games at home Saints have failed to score - 540 minutes with no goal at home - Like Eastleigh I predict a Saints goal within the first 10 mins, swiftly followed by another one or two and another West Ham capitulation. By the time we play at the OS we will be rock bottom of the league - no doubt
It's the type of run, we so like to help out with. Always obliging. Tadic, Gabbiadini etc looks strong on paper.

On the other hand, yesterday will have left nobody under any illusions what's required and Southampton aren't Man U and we did well down there last year. I expect Man U to be top 4 this year, they look balanced and have added well, whereas maybe Southampton's 'luck' may have run out and bottom half beckons.

Assuming none of the injured boys make it back in time.

Hart, Zabaleta, Fonte, Reid, Cresswell, Byram, Noble, Rice, Arnautovic, Ayew, Hernandez.

4-4-2 please, Slav.

We will not be playing a midfield of Pogba and Matic every week; and in fact I can't think of a more physically dominant midfield in the world right now.

Antonio should be back for this so I would not necessarily make wholesale changes as he offers us a genuine outlet;

Hart
Zabaleta - Reid - Ogbonna - Cresswell
Rice - Obiang
Antonio - Ayew - Arnautovic
Hernandez.

Bench; Adrian, Masuaku, Fonte, Noble, Carvalho (?), Sakho, Byram

Initial thought is same team as yesterday, but Byram in for Fernandes, Ayew moves in behind the striker.

As much as I want to settle a back four, you've got to bring Cresswell in if he's fit.

I don't see Cresswell as a defensive improvement on Masuaku - they're both vulnerable. Whoever plays, they're likely to be up against Redmond so I'd go for the quicker of the two.

antonio out wide, ayew behind the striker. rice and obiang sitting, same back four with a coin flip over cresswell and masuaku.

have no clue what to make about arthur at this point. he is consistently one of the best players on the pitch while occasionally being one of the worst.

I personally think Cress is way less calamity prone. Masuaku missed the ball completely 8 yards in front of his own goal yesterday. Was just pretty useless, and seeing how he was against West Brom away last year, it's not a one off.

Regardless who plays, the effort, the quality and the team work have to improve tenfolds (yeah, Manchester United played well, doesn't change the fact that West Ham were terrible in every aspect) if we hope to get anything other than humiliation from the fixture. It's not that we lost at Old Trafford, it's the way we lost

I think Antonio is due back. Therefore my team would be:

---------------------Hart-------------------------
Zabaleta--Reid---Ogbonna---Cresswell
Antonio----Rice---Obiang----Arnautovic
------------Ayew-----Hernandez------------

Adrian, Masuaku, Fonte, Fernandes, Sakho, Noble, Byram

If we are winning late add Fonte, take off Ayew (5-4-1)
If we are losing late add Masuaku, Sakho, Noble, take off Cresswell, Rice, Ayew (3-4-3)

I don't care about line-up's and formations, all I care about is backing the 11 lads wearing our badge.

My first game of the season and I can't wait.... Yates's here I come :scarfer:

If I was in charge and Iron Mike is the only one fully fit from the injury list I'd drop Ayew for him and tell the rest of them to get out there and put that performance @ Old Trafford right. Nobody came away from that game looking good just not as bad as some.
