Stats can be misleading...

A player could pass to one of our players but it could put them under pressure yet the pass gets recorded as completed

A player can have a shot on target which is soft and straight at the keeper and another player hits it an inch wide but has the keeper beaten

Watching the game is the only way to really see a player's contribution and the effect they have on a game

I can see us taking another pounding unfortunately. It doesn't seem to matter how good or the opposition is, our midfield and defence are devoid of any confidence, cohesion, and are about as watertight as a sieve.

3-0 saints.

Do the statistics bods work their numbers out by reading the papers or listening to the radio?

Hart
Zab Reid Ogbonna
Byram Obiang Noble Carvalho Cresswell
Sakho Hernandez

If no Carvalho then Kouyate and have Noble playing the DM role

Make sure we don't lose. We won't.

2-1 West Ham. Hernandez with his first and Obiang

My point being watching the game and forming an opinion not watching a game and recording stats to determine a players contribution

A player using "stats" could have 10 shots on target recorded but all 10 were soft straight at the keeper attempts.... another player, hit the post twice and hit a couple of shots just a fraction off the target but had the keeper beat.

Stats shows one player with 10 shots on target, another with 4 off target

Someone that hasn't watched the game but uses stats thinks the first player played better

Same with a player making useless short sideways passes but has a 90% completion rate... tells you nothing if you didn't see the passes.

Hope this explains it

Makes sense in the short run, but over a longer duration?

Missing by a yard might as well be missing by a mile. A miss is a miss.

Obviously shots on target can be measured against goals scored to calculate a conversion/efficiency level as well.

People watching on first viewing have a tendency to follow the ball, miss wider implications and be wrapped up in emotions if they support a team. They are perhaps the worst watchers.

I get what you mean and think stats make interesting reading....

However if I have watched a player over a long period of time then form a opinion based on what I see then to me that's a better judgement than "yes but they had a 90% pass accuracy and had 10 shots on target"

Based on the theory those passes and shots could still have been crap... another player could have made 1 decent pass and 1 shot on target and end up with an assist and goal.

Anyway...

I think we will beat Southampton 3-0

Hernandez (2) and Noble

Anything team, except Ayew on the right wing.

Having a shot on target could be one of the key factors for us potentially winning this match

Well Saints haven't scored a goal at home since April i think it is, so we all know they'll score within 10 mins to get that hoodoo out the way.

We simply can't seem to defend with a back 4, lucky Southampton are probably one of the least dangerous offensive teams in the league without Austin.
I quite like the look of that. Although would rather Fonte in over Ogbonna

I think Fernandes should be dropped. Hopefully Carvalho is signed and available by then. What are the chances of Lanzini/Antonio/Kouyate being fit? Lanzini would make a world of difference to that midfield.

Is it just me or in a perverse sort of way it's almost a good thing that this game has been switched?
It gives the team a chance to get up and running without the pressure of being the first home game and therefore removes a little of the 'expectation'

Of course, that's all good if we win it! :?

Sturm Graz - Clean Sheet
Fulham - 1 goal conceded
Bremen - 1 goal conceded
Bremen - 2 goals conceded
Altona 93 - 3 goals conceded
Man City - 3 goals conceded
Man United - 4 goals conceded

We're gonna win 6-5 :scarfer:

For me man u was a write off, moanrinio has hardly lost a home game since he started managing, not many teams will come away from old Trafford with anything this season, we've got it out of the way early and hopefully it will be a kick up the backside for everyone in the club, the season starts now, minimum of a point is required

I just went to post my favoured line-up for this game...

But I have absolutely no idea who to pick or what formation to play!

is the correct answer - last 6 games at home Saints have failed to score - 540 minutes with no goal at home - Like Eastleigh I predict a Saints goal within the first 10 mins, swiftly followed by another one or two and another West Ham capitulation. By the time we play at the OS we will be rock bottom of the league - no doubt
