Could kouayte play in a back 4 with Reid? I would be tempted to try it on Wednesday night.

Just back after 24 hours in the Black Country.

The curry remains the highlight of the weekend - I've largely forgotten the game already.

Funny how people have been calling for Noble's head to speed things up as we moved the ball slower than continental drift. Still, a successive clean sheet and further proof that a team under Slav can grind things out when necessary.

I thought Winston was outstanding, when he's fit he looks like the sort of player Liverpool are crying out for.

I don't know who Tony Knight was, but it was a truly lovely gesture from his granddaughter
to hand out flyers today asking for applause on 31 mins in tribute to his memory as a lifelong hammer and I was so pleased she had the whole away end respond. That and the goat balti will live with me.

Wow West Brom were embarrassing. 10 or 11 men behind the ball and timewasting to get a 0-0 draw at home to us!

Thought we were solid, but massively missed Lanzini to give us somebody to get the ball from deep and create.

We were in good voice, and clearly that reached the pitch as I think I saw all 11 players clap us at the end.

Win next week and we're 1 point behind them!

It will be interesting to see if Antonio gets more time at right wingback. In the period at the end of our last season at the Boleyn he seemed pretty good as a right wingback. It all seemed to wrong when Slav tried to make him a full on full back. 3-4-3 with Antonio as one wingback then allows us to get three from Hernandez, Lanzini, Arnautovic, Carroll, Ayew or Sakho on the pitch.

As poor a game of football as either sets of supporters are likely to see this season .Neither Keeper was really called upon to any great extent , and WBA showed zero attacking intent .They were organised but dull beyond words .

I thought Zabaleta played well for us but I'd much rather we played 3-5-2 rather than 3-4-3 .In my formation he wouldn't get a game .Today though in the absence of our only two passing midfielders Slaven called it right .

They nearly caught us out in the first half when both Kouyate and Obiang were in front of the ball deep in their half , and we lost possession .A better team than WBA would have punished us . Having said that we were clearly the better side today , we kept a clean sheet and picked up a point away from home .

The Collins injury was avoidable , we had the chance to sub him when he was clearly struggling , but we gambled and lost .

Crap game .

[HH] wrote:Pros:
- Clean sheet
- Arnautovic looked lively and offered more creativity than the other 10. Glad he is back.
I saw the game live from near the front on the side Arnautovic was laying; he was very poor and went over too easily.
- There is a game plan, even if it is extremely dull. Hopefully it's temporary to stop the rot.
- Lanzini return will boost, but this formation cannot accommodate Lanzini, Hernandez, Carroll, Antonio, Arnautovic in a starting XI.

Cons:
- Any other formation, we look **** defensively.
- Hernandez out of position is wasted. He's a poacher, not a wing-forward
- Playing a back 5 + 2 defensive midfielders is beyond conservative against the calibre of Huddersfield and WBA, despite WBA having the better chances via Robson-Kanu and Morrison.
- Game plan revolves around Carroll's availability. Beyond that there's little else in terms of passing and movement in the final third.

"Small steps" and "back to basics" - is this really what a manager in his third year should be doing? That's why he won't be getting his contract renewed.

Bilic will have explained to him that he'll be playing left side for a short term only until Arnautovic and Lanzini are back - he's a professional footballer and knows it's a team game , his chance to play in his preferred position will come .

Just getting home.

The game is summed up by a text from some fellow posters on here "the highlight of the day was Laffers falling through a door Del Boy style"

Started reading the usual **** on here and Twitter then gave up.

The supporters in the away end day all stayed and clapped the team off in the end in acknowledgement of them being the team that tried to win the game.

We weren't bad today but remember we're still missing our most creative spark. It's always gonna be difficult going away to a side that are happy for a point and will niggle their way through a game and kill time at every opportunity in the second half.

Another ref that had a stinker.

I've just got back & like Doc the highlight for me was the curry. Also thought our support was excellent and prefer our away matches from home for the buzz, OS just has no soul.

For me Antonio is wasted as a wingback, he's our top scorer ffs! Much more effective marauding at defences all around the box than running up and down the line.

Our team is just so unbalanced. Players that prefer the forward left 3rd of the pitch are Arnie, Ayew, Antonio, Holland and possibly Lanzini & Obiang. Players that prefer the forward right 3rd are....er....possibly Fernandez? I know Antonio can play right but he prefers left. Consequently some players are having to play out of their comfort zones and it shows. Carroll, as good as he is, just doesn't seem to fit our set up, I just hope when Lanzini gets back he's dropped and used for an impact sub.

uninspiring performance, not helped by Pulis's desire to play 11 defenders.

Should have won that :fsake:

I always try to avoid hearing the result when we're away.
That way I can watch motd with no idea how it turned out.
Kind of gives it away though, when we're on last...
What a bunch of arse.

Not a bad point up there I suppose. They were bang in form last season and we've always struggled to break down Pulis' sides.

If Obiang's effort would of dropped by a a couple of CMs and bounced in we'd all be happy bunnies. But yeah, not a great deal to write home about regarding the rest of the game.

We definitely miss a good dead ball specialist, Cresswell's deliveries were poor but did get better, Arnie's weren't great either.

Thought Fonte had a good game, Antonio was probably our best player. Always gives 100%

Lots of long balls and crosses aimed at Carroll, some of which he didn't win. The WBA back-line had him under wraps really. I think Bilic is struggling to accommodate the strikers, doesn't look like Carroll and Hernandez is going to work at present, certainly shifting Hernandez out wide is not getting the best from him.

One positive to take from the game is Bilic (if true) was probably right to turn down the Polish bloke from PSG, and Renato Sanches by the looks of things. So kudos to Slav there.

hernandez needs to play up front down the middle. carroll is good but we become too predictable.

for spurs I would play

hart
collins reid fonte
zab kouyate lanzini obiang cresswell
hernandez antonio

subs adrian byram masuaka ayew carroll arnautovic sakho

some good options on the bench apart from CM where noble is injured.

It's quite funny looking at the advert on the OS for 'The First West Ham United Kit 1900'. They all look so serious yet the truth of the matter is they can't string 3 passes together and haven't been able to since we left the Boleyn. I look at that advert and am not 'buying into' this bollox! They are trying to hoodwink us.

Apart from Antonio the rest of the team are two bob.

Watching the recorded Sky match this morning something that got right up my nose was Tony Gale's snidey remarks regarding West Ham players -

On Andy Carroll - ' Needless corner ' when Andy gets back to defend and gets involved in a tussle with the West Brom winger- ' Should have done better there , should have got his shot away ' after a deep cross to Carroll which he got his chest to with the usual 2 defenders on him .

On Winston Reid who as Captain has gone up to the Ref to complain about Foster hacking down Hernandez - '' I don't like that , he's run 60-70 yards to try to get a player sent off , last week Winston Reid kicked someone in the head '' . Nothing about Foster hacking down Hernandez .

On Marko Arnautovic who is lying there injured - '' Trouble with Arnautovic is if something like that happens to him he's always looking to get one back on the player that's done 'im '' . [ a case of slander perhaps ? ] .

Not a peep about any West Brom players .
