We're useless when we play with a back 4 so needs to be 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 tomorrow. Also need some pace in our defence / wingbacks to counter their wingers.

My first match since we left The sacred Boleyn, albeit in the upper tier of the Holmesdale [beggers can't choose...]

The absolute bare minimum requirement is a clean sheet, in my view. Sure, I won't be too unhappy to see a win, where we also concede, but these opponents have scored in 1/9 of their games! It will be a major blow to their confidence if we can also prevent them from scoring.

I'm mixing and matching a team, here, because in my view, this is a game where we need to have focus and to also use the full width of a generally small pitch. So

Hart (more because its inevitable, than because I consider him better than Adrian)

Zaba
Reid
Ogbonna

Byram
Noble
Lanzini
Kouyate
Creswell

Ayew
Hernandez

The width in the midfield 5 is in fact designed to allow for us to double-down on the two real dangers in Palace's team, namely Zaha and Townsend. If the latter doesn't sense it will be his day, early on, he will fade into insignificance, whereas Zaha will run for the 90.

The front two can take it in turns to pressure the ball, especially Cabaye, who has become lazy and unfocused (according to a Palace-supporting mate).

Mark and Kouyate can run midfield, moving as quickly as possible the ball to Manu, who appears, perhaps a little belatedly to have taken it up a gear at Wembley mid-week.

In terms of bench options, it may seem a bit harsh to exclude both Obiang and Antonio, but we can instead hold them back, for fresh legs in the last 1/3 of the match.

My full complement of subs:
Adrian, Fonte, Rice, Obiang, Fernandez, Arnautovic, Carroll

I'd play very similar, but Kouyate where Zab is, Zab for Byram, Obiang in midfield.

I do wonder whether Obiang could become a very good third centre back option. Pace, can pass from the back, discipline.

I remember the upbeat feel after we beat Man U 4-0 under Uncle Avram

Next game we lost 1-0 away to Sunderland!

I have absolutely no idea what the result will be tomorrow

Crystal Palace are a much better side than their league position suggests, and who knows what version of West Ham will turn up

if byram was a left back he'd be a shoe in after wednesday. went under the radar a bit but i watched the match back again and he was outstanding, only thing keeping him out the team is that he's competing with a premier league great.

fernandes too, but i can see the gaffer going for a bit more steel.

Nothing wrong with having him up the sleeve as an impact sub. Surely one flick on is not enough to earn him a start?
I disagree, without that flick on we don’t win. It’s game changing, and no matter how bad he or we play he can come up with that moment. He’s also a nuisance from corners that can’t go unchecked leading to goals from set pieces like on Wednesday. He’s also probably our best set piece defender, Brighton probably don’t score that first goal with Carroll on the pitch.

I’d rather we play nicer football with a more fluid front line but we’re still desperate for points.

it doesn't have to be that. can't drop noble, and i say that with 0% sentiment.

you'll want ayew buzzing around their net too, not dropping deep.

the only questions for me are carroll vs. hernandez (the latter is undoubtedly a better player, but too similar to ayew who should be nailed on), fernandes vs. obiang and which three of kouyate/ogbonna/rice/reid.

Can't wait for this one...

---------------------------- Hart -----------------------------
------------- Kouyate --- Reid --- Ogbonna ------------
Zabaleta ------- Noble -- Fernandes ------- Cresswell
-------------------------- Lanzini -----------------------------
------------------- Ayew ----- Hernandez----------------

Adrian, Fonte, Masuaku, Obiang, Antonio, Arnautovic, Carroll

Masuaku and Obiang in for Cresswell and Fernandes if there is any fatigue.

Need to be fresh for this one.

Anyone remember the name of the pub, where we were kicking around a football and the old bill tried and failed to get it, eventually getting it last season.

We could need some pace tomorrow: I'd play Masuaku. He can nullify Zaha.

Cannot see the need for Carroll tomorrow.

Their big thing is going to be pace, the lack of pressure Carroll puts on a defender on the ball is gonna make it a lot easier for them to find their few damaging players.

This 100%

Hernandez or Ayew will cause their defenders more problems with their movement, and Sakho will probably deal with Carroll's threat in the air.

I would put Kouyate at CB again and keep Noble in midfield.

The most important thing of all is to keep it 352.

I think it would also be daft to change the side. As you were.

I would be tempted to play Byram and Zaba, I fear any of our centre backs being ran at by Zaha, but Kouyate and his puppet legs could trip him without Kouyate knowing

How many seasons did we keep the rozzers at bay?
