Re: Wigan Athletic v West Ham Utd: FA Cup 4th rnd match thread
Hmm, if anyone thought Shrewsbury was a potential banana skin, this is definitely a bigger one.
Top of Div 1, the highest goal scorers & with a goal difference of +40, we underestimate these at our own peril. They know where the goal is.
Oh for a big, strong squad...

Hart, Byram, Rice and Hernandez will start.
If any of Antonio, Ayew, Reid or Fonte are fit, they will feature.

If you believe the Shrewsbury replay including extra time contributed to today's draw, let's hope the club learn from it and field a team to win it at the first time of asking.

Yep, I can see us making lots of changes and losing. They're top of league one and looking good value for it. They'll be very confident.

Wigan will play about ten games more than us this season and have a smaller squad, I doubt they'll be resting anyone, go for it I say.

Taking a pragmatic view, the last thing any of us (team, fans etc) needs is a replay.
Hart, Byram, Rice seem to be fairly certain first team picks (unless Byram is still not match fit).
Hopefully Hernandez can get into the side and make himself an important contributor to the team, in Lanzini's absence.
Strikes me that one (or both) of Antonio and Sakho need to step up, too.
Wigan appear to have a bit more about them in attack, than Shrewsbury, but, without meaning them any disrespect, they are still two divisions below us.
C'mon Irons...give us a run...

Wigan are a very good side, a definite step up from shrewsbury despite their similar league position, but probably wont play their first team as they are concentrating on promotion

A very good League One side, put that team in the Premier League and they'd struggle to get 10 points

They are of the standard of a mid table championship side IMHO.Jumby wrote:A very good League One side, put that team in the Premier League and they'd struggle to get 10 points
Anyway they will play an under strength team so it is a moot point. The league is their bread and butter

I can think of a team where they would get 6 for a start...

Wigan haven't been a mid table Championship side for years, they've been relegated twice from the Championship in the past four seasons. They're flying this season, in League One, but let's not get carried away, whilst they deserve to be respected, we should be beating these, they're not Barcelona, they're Wigan Athletic, with Will Grigg up front.

The Cup is a great leveler. Always has been, always will be. Take any side for granted at your own peril.

They do have a player called Max Power though! Also think that a side's 'current form' can defy, at least temporarily, their league standing. 'On the night' etc.Jumby wrote:they're not Barcelona, they're Wigan Athletic, with Will Grigg up front.

Re: Wigan Athletic v West Ham Utd: FA Cup 4th rnd match thread
Even if we sign a couple of players this week, it will still be our second string against Wigan:
3-5-2: Hart; Burke, Ogbonna, Rice; Byram, Oxford, Cullen, Noble, Masuaku; Ayew, Martinez.
