Re: Wigan Athletic v West Ham Utd: FA Cup 4th rnd match thread
will be incredibly tough....we go there with plenty of injuries and a threadbare squad
they are top of league 1, have scored bucket loads of goals, 3 in their last match and 3 against bournemouth
they will smell blood

I expect more if what we did against Shrewsbury, 4/5 first team players and all the youth. Given our current injury situation we can't do much more. Possibly more of a second leg bench strength rather than first but still expect us to try and win without exposing our key asset to any risk.
I'd love us to have a proper go at the FA cup but Moyes will know that FA cup quarter final and relegation = no job for him next year, while survival = several more years in our or someone else's gravy train.

I think it's far more probable that it will be a youth team, by and large, supplemented by a handful of first teamers. Realistically given fitness issues that's all we can hope for. The bench may be relatively strong but in truth we will be doing our best to win without risking any of our main players.
As for Moyes, later stages of the FA cup won't save him - only PL survival will.

It's not his fault as this is the direction set by the Board, and to that end I'll give him some leeway, but PL survival at the cost of throwing the FA Cup won't endear him to me.Smonnie wrote:

I want a manager to come in and throw the league in favour of winning a trophy we can all savour and remember.

We had one. Many people seemed petrified about staying in the League though.
The Club can't cope unless they have a Allardyce/Moyes type in charge. But for me it's taking a lot of the fun out of the game. Under Bilic it always felt exciting through the good and the bad times trying to play the right way. That's the type of managers I want us to have.

Not been to Wigan before any advice on pre match pubs would be great cheers.

...is the most likely scenario (edit) , which I can understand from a purely financial perspective. The Prem has become the be all and end all of English football and a long cup run given the very tight lower half of the league table and our injury perma-crisis might seem an unnecessary distraction. We may be 11th but we are only 4 points above the relegation zone.
From a fan's point of view, I'd take a cup final and risk relegation, as great memories are made of special days, not relief at getting past 40 points and the right to be makeweights for the Sky Six the next season.

As I've said countless times before. Why the f@@k bother if they're not gonna give it their best shot. When I was a kid it was almost better to win the FA cup than the league !
Thank you Sky, Premier league, and all the other greedy blasters that run football now days. You've totally ruined the greatest cup competition in the world.

Red Robin, 100m from the stadium, welcomes away fans. We've always had a good old pre-match sing-song in there.light n bitter wrote:Not been to Wigan before any advice on pre match pubs would be great cheers.
I think it's usually shut after the game, but there are plenty of pubs on the way back to the station.

Re: Wigan Athletic v West Ham Utd: FA Cup 4th rnd match thread
I'd like to see us go relatively strong for this
Hart, (back 4) Byram, Collins, Burke, Cresswell (middle 3) Rice, Noble, Cullen, (top 3) Arnie, Hernandez, Antonio
Give Antonio the first half, maybe Martinez / Haksabanovic the second. Also be good for Fonte to get some time in the second half.
We certainly need to win, but it's nice game time for the kids to play with some of our stronger players

We don't do easy.
Don't normally score goals.
Normally not the best in the first half.
Sit back too much.
It's the cup.
It's a mega potential banana skin.
They will probably sue us.
Sully is keeping his mouth shut.
I want to ride the barmaid.
Can I just say I have no idea how this match will go.

If all 3 are fit I would love to see Rice, Burke and Oxford start as our 3 cb's

They will turn us over purely because they've got a player named Max Power. That will be enough to see us off. 2-1.

Strongest starting 11. Win the game first half. Change the players at HT to ensure our big players (match winners) are fit for Palace.
If our best 11 albeit depleted can’t beat Wigan when it’s likely going to have a home tie atmosphere then questions need to be asked.
3-1 WHU. 2 for Arnie and 1 for Ogbonna
