James Collins or James Tomkins ? [POLL]

Post by davids cross »

Just a simple question really. Supposing James Collins is fit for the Sunderland game do you bring him straight back in for Tomkins ? I'm just inclined myself to let Tomkins partner Upson, I think he has done enough to keep the shirt. Ultimately Collins will probably regain the spot but in the short term or until he messes up I think I would stick with Tomkins.

I'd be inclined to stick with Tomkins until he has a bad game. Collins should get games for Wales, maybe best not to play him too much too soon anyway...

I'd let Collins get back to full fitness.. Let him play for Wales and get any mistakes out his system in those games. Tomkins playing in between Neil and Upson will be important to his development and since we're not sure if Neil will be with us next year I'd try and play Tomkins quite a bit until the end of the season.
Having said that.. If Collins is sh*ting all over Tomkins in training then he'd get the nod from me.

Edit. Oh and if I am Zola for the day can I have my hair back after?

Collins. I think at this point in the campaign, since it is our manager's intent to get us into Europe, that we need our experienced players to have the 'all hands on deck' attitude. Tomkins has been great, but one for the future, and certainly a viable replacement in the event of injuries. But, for now, I suggest we stick with Collins if we aim for Europe.

I would tell him it's bang out of order, then go over to console Tomkins...

Tomkins looks like he'll turn out to be a better player/defender than Collins. But he'll only get there through playing lots of 1st team football for us. Tomkins impresses me near enough every time I see him.

Tomkins for me.

I think Tomkins has been foot perfect the last few games when we have been under the cosh.

Haven't seen Ginge play three such good games on the trot..

I would reward him by keeping him in....

Collins if he is 100% fit. He has been immense this season. If there is even the slighteast doubt then Tomkins with no worries. Sunderland have some big bastards up front so we need our biggest bastards as well. Ginge has the edge when 100%.

Answer - Tomkins, just.

Question - what do we think about, in the event of an Upson injury, how well Collins and Tomkins might play together?

Well if Collins is having to resort to such seriously foul play to dislodge Tomkins, I'd drop the ginger defaecator!

Seriously though, it's a real tough one. That is, Tomkins should start the next game, he's done nothing wrong. I guess Ginge, having played 2 games in a week having just come back from injury could do with sitting the Sunderland game out, and coming back in more gradually

I do think over a run of games, Collins would be the slightly safer option, as he is less likely to make a mistake being more experienced. So maybe let Tomka have the mackems games, and look to bring Ginge in for when we face the likes of spurs...

But then again, iirc, Collins did pretty well against Kenwyne Jones, so maybe play Ginge in that one and have Tomka back for the next.......

Oh f*** it, I don't know!

I think that looks ok to me. Collins the more aggresive and Tomkins a bit more cultured. On paper (as they say) it should work. Losing Upson though would be huge for any peroid of time.

Timpkons for me, what better time to give him regular 1st team experience than now.

No brainer imo.

Collins is class and I still maintain isn't too far off Upson's standard.

However, let him get fit as Tomkins is doing superb so there's no need to rush him back.

Obviously Collins is good and all that but I actually think it would be a mistake if we did not continue to blood young Tomkins at Premier League level while he is playing relatively good. This seems to be his time... let's not knock him down a level.

Not been over it with a fine tooth comb but it's about 10-5 to Tomkins with Stu being Sir Trevor Brooking
