Current squad .
Forwards : Piquionne, Hall, Montenegro, Cole, Maynard, Baldock,Sears, and possibly Vaz Te .
Midfielders : Nolan, Noble , Collison, O'Neil, Taylor, Morrison, Barerra
Defenders : Reid, Tomkins, O'Brien,Demel, Spence,Potts
Keepers :Stech, Henderson .
I reckon Sam may spend the bulk of his budget at the back .Call it a hunch .
Amen Pinky It's interesting the seeming ratio of posts regarding attacking players v defensive players in this thread. I would genuinely not be particularly upset if we didn't spend any of our transfer budget on attacking players and simply used freebies and loans there. Defensively however.....

So up front we have Maynard, Cole, Vaz Te and Baldock (if he isn't sold) How many of those have done the business in the top flight? Forget the others mentioned.

Very true. They would be unlucky if all three are **** though.

My feelings exactly!! Rodriguez unproven in the Premier League and a big gamble at £7m

Edited for you minus the players that won't be in the first team squad.... Although Baldock will probably be loaned out to... I wouldnt want O'Brien, Demel or O'Neil in a premier league starting XI either... That squad is the slowest I have seen.... We need PACE Need two pacey full backs and two centre backs for the season. Defensive midfielder with an engine. There is no creative midfielders there other than Morrison who is untested and we need some pace on the wing. Then a goal scorer, again preferably with pace

Critically looking at that squad, Hall, Morrison, Potts and Montano are works in progress, whether they are ready to step up remains to be seen, they will get chances. Montenegro and Stech are not going to get any game time. Piq, Sears, Barrera and Spence are good chances to be moved on or loaned out. As regular first team choices that leaves Forwards:Cole, Maynard, Baldock, Vaz Te Midfield: Nolan, Noble, Collison, O'Neill, Taylor Defenders: Reid, Tomkins, O'Brien, Demel Minimum requirements would be 1 forward (Yakubu?), a wide player (Zaha or Snodgrass?), a RB (Clyne?), a LB if McCartney not coming back and a CH.

5 players required one more striker, proven or unproven doesn't matter (loan or free) One winger, again proven or unproven doesn't matter but offers more than taylor going forward (£££££) Left back, would like someone better than McCartney (loan or free) Right back, someone decent and proven (£££££) Centre back, preferably from any of the recently relegated teams as I would like to see Winston and Tomkins as first choice (£££££)

I personally dont agree with this chain of thought. Apart from the 'top 6' I don't think the gulf in class between the mid to lower premiership and the top ten in last years championship is that great. If one of our forwards scored against Southampton, Reading and Birmingham, will he not be able to score against WBA, Norwich or Wigan, simply because he has no premiership experience? Lets sign a Nigerian forward and an ageing French striker at the expense of Baldock and Maynard. They have never had a chance at the premiership so they aint good enough. And we wonder why we can't compete gainst the elite on the world stage....

if those lists of players over the last few posts show anything it's that we are woefully short of bodies to even put out a defence let alone have any competition for places
plenty of time to go but still hoping defence is the priority

Yep .It's screamingly obvious . Spence couldn't get a game for a side in the wrong half of the Championship .He may come good in time but I don't see Sam risking him as a starter this season . O'Brien will be a useful back up player , but would be exposed in the top flight . Demel has much to prove in terms of fitness . Reid ? Have to be honest , I have huge reservations .In fairness we won't be playing Manchester United, Arsenal etc every week , but there are quite a few sides who have forwards that may fancy their chances of losing him . We need two CB's , a LB, a RB and a decent DM . We have enough up top . Blackburn Rovers scored more league goals than Liverpool ( Carroll , Kuyt, Suarez , Gerrard, Downing, Adam) did last season , but unfortunately conceded 38 more than them . Liverpool finished 7th , Blackburn were relegated .

So easy isn't it.........
Keeper needs a settled back four....New Keeper (has to be able to command the six yard box). Tomkins and Reid............................Center mid...back up is ? (the all important position in being able to transition the play) Left back MaCartney........................Good enough, Potts ? (ability to get for forwards down the flanks) has to be able to support midfield but also protect the majority of right footed flankers. (NO glaring weakness), Right back Demel/Job.....................Good enough, ?. NO, glaring weakness. Midfeild............................................The conundrum continues. Forwards.........................................The lone attack...sex and drugs and rock and roll.
Lot of work to be done folks, if we don't want a Villa start. Our manager will make a difference this time with right backing. Don't go in the transfer thread, but Left Back and Right Back, goodbye no where the standard needed for the prem. We'll get burnt down the flanks, sorry.

Reid will make the step up and become a huge hit in the Prem. Seriously.
I read it on twitter somewhere.

Well you'll have to point me to the post I made which said otherwise. He was given **** for a period of about ten games when he played pretty poorly. He may well have scored in that time, but he still played poorly. The Rebirth has confirmed the stick did happen. I've been on here since 2005 and don't remember him getting the stick you say. I have no interest in trying to prove you right so you go look.
Well I have no interest in proving you wrong particularly. You're the one who's waded into this thread with a load of aggro saying I talk **** all the time and Ashton never got criticised for playing ****. If you want to think I'm a knob I'm absolutely fine with that, and I have no real inclination to try and prove you wrong. Life is far too short to give anything resembling a ****. Good luck to you.

Sorry, just catching up on all this transfer rumour stuff but if Sp*rs think they'll get James Tomkins for £5M they're taking the piss. I'm sick of those bastards taking us for a ride. Hopefully the board will reject any approach out of hand. James is still young for a centre half but has come on in leaps and bounds and was absolutely fantastic last season. I know that every player has their price but James Tomkins' price must be at least 3 times the figure quoted.

I agree that we really need to strenghten our back line, but unfortunately we really need to strengthen up front, and midfield, aswell. We usually play with a lone striker, and the only one who can play that role is Cole IMO. And he won´t be playing 38 games for 90 mins, thats for sure. Baldock and Maynard can come of the bench if we want to play 442. Vaz is an attacking winger, and not a no. 9. We also need a winger and a DM. In the bakc we need two LB:s and two CB:s, one who can also paly lb. All in my opinion of course.

The most vital signing this summer will be a combative defensive central midfielder, in the mould of Fabrice Muamba (who I would have loved to have signed before what happened to him).
After that - we need a goal scoring striker, pace on the left and right wing with crossing ability, a new central defender, and then two full backs and a keeper!.
No problems there then.
