Suggested Starting XI

Postby Doc H Ball on Sat Jun 16, 2012 2:17 pm

As suggested by The Old Man of Storr (Skye News), a thread dedicated to the possible starting line ups next term.

It will be interesting to see how this changes with transfer news and to see who is left from the team that ran out at Wembley:

.....................Green

Demel......Reid....Tomkins....Linda

Vaz Te...Collison...Noble.....Taylor

......................Nolan

......................Cole

Subs: Collins, O'Neil, Maynard, Henderson, O'Brien.

My first effort:

....................Henderson

Solly........Tomkins....Reid......Linda

Vaz Te.....Collison.....Noble.....Moses

.......................Nolan

.......................Cole

Subs: Jussi, Maynard, CB, O'Neil, Striker.

I might be shot for saying this , but if I was manager , I might consider either dropping or selling Nolan or Noble and sign a playmaker ,and as I've often said , I'd go for Mark Davies of Bolton .

It's just a fun thread , fj , about guessing what the starting line up might look like come the August kick off .

I forgot about Richardson as well , I'd have him at left wing or sub .

Looks like I'm in the minority thinking that we'll get murdered playing a striker plus vaz te, Nolan and Elia/zaha in the same starting eleven. When chasing a game fair enough but if our plan is to soak up pressure and hit people on the break then having 4 players who actually do very little pressuring and defensive work would seem a strange way to go imo

Wingers pin the Fullbacks in place. Nolan closed down a lot more once he was fit. Bit of energy alongside Noble and all is good.

The problem with a Collison or O'Neil type is that you get no major benefit in attack or defence. Just average at both. I'd much rather have 4 clear attacking players plus 6 who are there to defend and transition the play.

With that in mind:

Jussi

Demel, Tomkins, Reid, new lb

Noble, new cm

New winger, Nolan, New winger

Vaz Te

You can flip that around though. With collison and O'Neil type players you get competence in attack and defence and no glaring weakness in either plus you keep the ball more and don't let the opposition hurt you as much. With vaz te/zaha types you get pure attack....no defence and immense pressure on the remaining few players to be purely defensive

Are you honestly trying to say that Vaz Te just waited on the touchline when we did not have the ball? The idea that wingers will not defend (especially under Sam) is laughable and belongs in the 1990's.

Undre Sam Nolan is undropable so you are saying either drop or sell Noble

I was flipping round the argument to show that there is a downside. A collison/O'Neil type being described as average all round implies they're not worth having in the team as they don't bring anything but they do bring more defensively than a winger IMO. Vaz te (for example) is a match winner and did the one thing in the play off final that won the game .....but apart from that he kept giving the ball away - if we overload the team with players like that we will be unbalanced and less effective rather than more effective IMO

I don't disagree that we need more of that player type in the squad - but don't understand putting them all in the starting eleven and putting so much emphasis on current defensive players - of which we have barely enough to fill the starting eleven

Funnily enough I actually think that Collison has the ability to give both good defensive and attacking capabilities. I still think he's one of the best finishers at the club, and with a run in the side think that he is excellent at getting up and around Cole.

The difficulty is that he hasn't had chance to get back to the consistency he showed before his injury, There's been moments like the Cardiff Semi and away at Forest when he looked back to his best. Maybe he's one of those players who is better in the top flight when we have teams coming at us, rather than having to make something happen.

The positive thing is now that already we have good options in central-ish midfield with Diame, Nolan,Noble, O'Neill, Collison, Taylor. I'd like to see at least one pacy winger arrive to provide competition for Vaz Te.

We'll bring in 4 more players before the window closes.

Impossible to know the starting line up at present. The current team will struggle to get 30 pts.

It's all about the next 8 weeks.
