2012 too for the same 'contextual' reasons, sentiment aside, + the boys of '86 weren't facing a defender with a rat sat on his head or they'd have hit them for 7.

Wasn't alive in 1986, so has to be 2012 for me. Hadn't beaten them in 12 and a half years and was a pretty special day.

Re: [POLL] 86 or 12?
2012 for me.
Yesterday we beat the champions of europe.
In 1986 we were a decent outfit that turned over a 2-bob team at a 2-bob stadium whilst pushing for the title ourselves.
The chelski team nowadays is made up of some of europes top players worth absolute fortunes. Where as we are a newly promoted team just hoping to survive in this league where every point is a bonus.

As were Chelsea. Far from two-bob.westham,eggyandchips wrote:In 1986 we were a decent outfit that turned over a 2-bob team at a 2-bob stadium whilst pushing for the title ourselves.

Re: [POLL] 86 or 12?
The 1985-86 Chelsea team finished just as high in the league as Chelsea did in 2011-12.
Good win yesterday - but no better than 1-0 v Spurs under Avi, or beating Arsenal at Highbury in their last season.

Re: [POLL] 86 or 12?
I will have to say '86 but as far as my memory goes I am sure I felt more ecstatic after yesterdays win then back then.
It was the very nature of it all, we came back from behind, we were dead at half time, we looked clueless.
We have layed down and died to that team for getting on ten years now, we once got done 0-4 and they only had 10 men. We have never even looked remotely like beating them (apart from a 1-1 at theirs a few years back).
Of course the two late goals helped, scoring late always is a better feeling then scoring early and holding on.
There was also a special atmosphere yesterday summed up as I glanced to my left after the third went in to see Allardyce and his staff doing some minature knees up on the touch line, everything just felt right.
Like I said its been a long time since '86, a day when we took the piss all game.
I swear I had a lump in my throat as I walked out yesterday and cannot remember when that last happened.
Our days are few, lets enjoy them when we can.

Re: [POLL] 86 or 12?
86
Very good Chelsea side (like 2012) and a close game for an hour or so. After which we went up a gear and Chelsea were lucky to only lose 4-0.
Plus Dev's goal was one of the best ever scored by a West Ham player. Fully-sighted keeper given no chance from about 23 yards.
Yesterday Chelsea could have been 3-0 up and coasting by half time.

Re: [POLL] 86 or 12?
Yesterday was a "West Ham are capable of bloodying anyone's nose" performance and result.
86 was a "West Ham might well be the very best football team in the country" performance and result.
Once in 117 years this club has been close to being the best football team in the country - and no day epitomised it more than that one at Stamford Bridge. We turn the "big" clubs over fairly regularly.

Re: [POLL] 86 or 12?
Can't call it - in the same way we can't compare the teams of yesteryear to the teams of today.I'm trying not to let the permanently-embedded claretn'blue glasses of my memory rule my life.
FWIW, I'm still trying to get over the trauma of relegation - 77/78 - and haven't quite caught up with the '80's yet, let alone what happened yesterday.

Not really so much these days Bubbs, been ten years since we last beat that lot.bubbles1966 wrote:Yesterday was a "West Ham are capable of bloodying anyone's nose" performance and result.

'86 for me. They were in the mix for the title with us, Everton and Liverpool. This drubbing put them in their place, but they beat us in the return fixture (Pat Nevin scoring with a header!) which scuppered our title chances somewhat.

Metaphorically speaking. They'll always be 2-bob to me.Up the Junction wrote: As were Chelsea. Far from two-bob.

Re: [POLL] 86 or 12?
When was the last time we beat the reigning European champions, after going a goal down?
A team that knocked out the best side of the last decade, and finished off their cup run by beating the home side. There is now a massive gulf between our teams, spending wise. Therefore that much harder to beat.

86. Games against Chelsea since Abramovich arrived have just been games against some weird all star team, although that appears to have morphed into a kind of man-love for Torres that has warped the entire club around trying to make him play better.
Their status is bigger than it was, but it's just not a proper football club any more to me.
