A massive season for me - Stephen

Rovers new boy Stephen Hendrie admits he has no regrets about making his move south of the border.
The Scottish left-back came through the youth ranks at Hamilton Academical and had amassed 100 league appearances by the age of just 20.

His fine form with the Scottish Premiership side attracted the attention of West Ham United, who secured his services last summer.

Hendrie is yet to feature for the Hammers’ first team however, but he hopes his loan move to Ewood Park can kick-start his career in English football.

“It was a big step (to move down to England), but it was a step everyone wants to take,” admitted the 21-year-old defender.

“Everyone wants to play at the highest level and I couldn’t knock it back – that chance may never come again – but I'm happy that I took it.

“I've obviously not been playing enough first team games, but you never know what's going to happen in the next few years, so I'm happy that I took that chance.

“It's tough to play at West Ham. It’s obviously a massive club and there are some great players there, but I've come to another big club and I’m wanting to play here and get some games under my belt.

“It's a massive season for me. I’ve got two years left on my contract, so I need to do well here and see what happens after that.”

Hendrie enjoyed a short but successful loan spell with Southend last season, where he scored once in five appearances and the full-back hopes to bring an attacking edge to Rovers’ style of play this season.

“I'm a left-back, so I like to get forward and bomb up and down, but defensive duties come first obviously,” added Hendrie, who scored the penultimate penalty in West Ham’s Under-21 Premier League Cup final shootout victory over Hull City in May.

“I need to defend for the team and then getting forward will come with it. But that’s just me, I just love to get forward and put in crosses.”

Excellent thread last year - Just a quick question, is Jaanai Gordon any good? Seems to me that if he's only scored 1 goal in 11 appearances in the Irish league at the age of 20 then he's unlikely to make it at premier league level :crest:

I could have sworn that I read somewhere that Jaanai was going to Sligo on a permanent deal. I'll see if I can dig anything up on it.

Half of his appearances have been from the bench and many of those under 10 minutes. I would also add that it doesn't matter how good a striker is if he's not getting the service. Take the current England team, for example.
He seems to have impressed at our youth level(s), so I'm loathe to write him off just yet. It does seem like he has a lot of improving to do if he is to make it at the highest level though.

I thought that was the case too. Was highly rated but not lived up to that potential thus far. He is still a baby really so may come again.

He'll never get in our team. If he wasn't attached to us does anyone think we'd be looking at him? He's in with Danny Whitehead and Sean Maguire as a failed little punt, that's not rhyming slang by the way

Check this quiz I made:

Can you name all Academy graduates to have played professionally for West Ham since the inception of the Premier League. It took me 8 attempts to get them all.

George Dobson: West Ham send teenage midfielder to Walsall on season-long loan

Walsall have made their sixth summer signing by bringing in teenage midfielder George Dobson on a season-long loan deal from West Ham United.

The 18-year-old central midfielder began his career at Arsenal, captaining their Under-18 side, before joining the Hammers in July 2015.

"George is someone we noticed a few months ago," said manager Jon Whitney.

"We did our homework on him and spoke to West Ham. He's held in high regard, a player who plays beyond his years."

Five of Whitney's six signings have been midfielders since he was officially appointed manager on 1 June.

Bermudian teenager Kacy Milan Butterfield was the first and was followed into Bescot by Peterborough United's Erhun Oztumer, Sheffield United's Florent Cuvelier and Colchester United's Joe Edwards.

Walsall, who reported back for pre-season training on Wednesday, secured their first loan deal from a Premier League when Southampton defender Jason McCarthy signed for the first half of next season.

"West Ham brought George in from Arsenal where he played as a centre half but was moved forward to play as a holding midfielder which is where we see him playing," added Whitney.

"I know he'll go on to be a top player of highest level and we're lucky that West Ham have entrusted us with his development for the next 12 months. Age isn't a factor. If he comes in and is good enough then he will play."

Sat July 16th v Solihull Moors (a)
Tue 19th July v Birmingham City (h)
Tue 26th July v Notts County (a)
Sat 30th July v Luton Town (a)

Knoyle joins Latics on loan

Kyle Knoyle has joined Wigan Athletic on loan
The 19-year-old enjoyed a succesful loan spell with Dundee United last season
The right-back is widely regarded as one of the most promising recent Academy of Football graduates
Young West Ham right-back Kyle Knoyle has joined Championship outfit Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan.

The 19-year-old England youth international, who joined the Hammers as a 13-year-old, made 15 appearances for the Development Squad last season, before gaining valuable first-team experience on loan at Dundee United.

Having impressed during his time with the Tangerines, where he made eleven appearances, the highly rated full-back has now joined the newly-promoted Latics.

His first competitive game for manager Gary Caldwell’s side could be the opening day of the new season away at Bristol City on Saturday 6 August.

Knoyle is the latest West Ham player to go out on loan, following George Dobson joining Walsall and Jaanai Gordon at Sligo Rovers.
