It may not be adios for Toni Martinez, says Oxford United boss Michael Appleton

Image

A KNEE injury looks like sidelining Toni Martinez for the final two games of the season – but Oxford United boss Michael Appleton has not ruled out attempting to re-sign the striker on loan next season.

The 19-year-old is back at parent club West Ham United getting treatment on the problem which kept him out of the U’s Easter games.

With only two fixtures remaining and their hopes of reaching the Sky Bet League One play-offs dashed earlier this month, it is unlikely Martinez will be rushed back.

Appleton praised the impact made by the Spaniard, who has started nine games, scoring three times, since joining in January.

And while Martinez’s wages may prove a stumbling block for a more lengthy loan, the United head coach is keen to explore the option.

He said: “Toni’s struggling with his knee and we’re in dialogue with West Ham.

“He will probably end up staying at West Ham between now and the end of the season.

“Whether it’s us or someone else, I think wherever he goes next year will reap benefits of the spell he’s had with us.

“You never know, it could be us again. It’s something that we will have conversations about over the summer.”

This is not good reading:

Grant McCann claims West Ham United midfielder Martin Samuelsen has lost all his confidence

Peterborough United boss Grant McCann has told the League One side’s official Youtube channel that West Ham United prospect Martin Samuelsen seems to have lost his confidence.

Samuelsen was on loan at Posh last season, and he impressed hugely during his time at the ABAX Stadium. The Norwegian international then opted to move to Blackburn Rovers on loan at the start of this season, but that switch did not work out as planned. The West Ham youngster barely played at Ewood Park, but Posh tried to rescue his season in January. Unfortunately, Samuelsen’s second move to Peterborough was nowhere near as productive as his first. The talented attacking midfielder barely featured for Posh, and rarely showed the quality that he possesses and McCann believes that Samuelsen’s confidence has gone after his spell at Blackburn.

“The Martin Samuelsen that was here last year was an unbelievable talent. He is an unbelievable talent. But for whatever reason his confidence got knocked when he went to Blackburn,” McCann said, after confirming that Samuelsen’s loan had been terminated early. "He didn’t have the confidence to try things that he once did, when he was here. I wanted him to express himself more. He needs to get somewhere where he can play week in week out. He should’ve come here at the start of the season, but he decided to go to the Championship. He’s a great kid, he’ll have a massive future in the game.”

West Ham now appear to have work to do to coax Samuelsen back to his best, as they look to help the youngster fulfil his potential. Samuelsen is still very highly regarded at West Ham, but Slaven Bilic may have to think long and hard about the next move he takes with the youngster, as another knock to his confidence could be extremely damaging.

I'm really pleased that Grant McCann has come out and said that, I think it applies to a number of the players we've loaned out, the younger years are all about nurturing and developing the talent that they have and we appear to be doing quite the opposite with a number of our kids.

The likes of Rio and Lampard would struggle to break through in today's game, teams are far too scared to give players a go because of what's at stake, I understand it but playing second rate players in front of them makes no sense. The absolute key for me is we have to find the best loan move for each player, they need to be a necessity for whoever is loaning them, not a back up in the event of a couple of injuries or suspensions.

Sam Howes only 19, getting some rave reviews down in non-league I think it's time we get him a football league gig.

What sort of age are keepers breaking through youth academies? I can only think of Pickford and he's already 23.

He's a regular amongst England set-ups from what I gather also. Far too early to tell but there might be a good Keeper there. Watch this space with him..

Not that it makes any different to his progress but he's also West Ham mad.

Whitney Keen To Keep On-Loan West Ham Midfielder

Walsall boss Jon Whitney wants West Ham midfielder George Dobson back on loan at the Banks's Stadium next season, insisting: 'He can be an influential player for us'.

Whitney will be looking to bolster his midfield after yesterday's news that former Aston Villa product Isaiah Osbourne is leaving the club this summer and he would love to have Dobson, 19, back for another campaign from Slaven Bilic's Hammers after seeing the midfielder blossom in his first season of first-team football, making 26 appearances for the Saddlers.

Whitney said: "I would like to try to keep George in some way if I can and I will speak to West Ham in the next week to try to make that happen. Our loan players are being spoken to about other clubs. Everybody is trying to fill their jigsaw really quickly and I'm doing the same with certain players and that's the way of football. George is someone I'm going to try to get and with another pre-season under his belt, he can be that influential player for us, alongside (captain) Adam Chambers."

93: Howes has to react instinctively to punch a shot clear.

Leon - I asked this the other day - do you know if Martinez is now eligible to play for us?

Though someone suggested he might be injured so it might be a moot point anyway

He's contracted to Oxford until the end of the season (late May/early June) so wouldn't be eligible to play. As you've said though, he is injured anyway.
