Although it's unlikely we'll match our points total from last season, there are definitely matches where we can claw back some of that 10 point deficit.

For example, last season we got a total of just 3 points from the following 5 matches:
Home to West Brom, Stoke, Swansea, Palace, Leicester.

There is still a lot of the season left. After 9 games last season Southampton had 13 points and Liverpool had 12 points.

They finished 1 point ahead and 2 points behind respectively.

As dodger says we can make up a ton of points from all those home draws last season.

Having done the thread for a few years it doesn't work like that unfortunately when your 'greens' from last season are against top sides.

Because we will then have to match scores (to make the improvements count) by beating Liverpool, Man City, Everton and Arsenal away.

It's tough to claw back a deficit when anything less than a win from each of those games means more ground lost. We're capable of beating some of those, don't get me wrong - but our start this season has heaped pressure on those games.

Week 10 Benchmark Review

Another 3 points lost against last season, we are now 13 worse off

Gameweek 9 West Ham 1-0 Sunderland (1-0) -10pts

Next 5 games
Gameweek 11 West Ham v Stoke (0-0) 1pt
Gameweek 12 Tottenham v West Ham (4-1) 0pt
Gameweek 13 Man Utd v West Ham (0-0) 1pt
Gameweek 14 West Ham v Arsenal (3-3) 1pt
Gameweek 15 Liverpool v West Ham (0-3) 3pt

Week 10 results (Last season in brackets)
Sunderland (-4) v Arsenal (-2) (0-0) 1-4
Manchester United (2) v Burnley (0) (0-0) 0-0
Middlesborough (-3) v Bournemouth (-5) (3-1) 2-0

West Bromwich Albion (4) v Manchester City (7) (0-3) 0-4
Crystal Palace (-2) v Liverpool (5) (1-2) 2-4
Everton (3) v West Ham (-7) (2-3) 2-0
Southampton (-2) v Chelsea (0) (1-2) 0-2
Stoke (0) v Swansea (0) (2-2) 3-1

Statto time -
6 out of 10 results the same as last season in week 10. Of the 100 games played so far, 47 have produced the same result. Tottenham have had 8 out of 10 the same, Crystal Palace, Burnley, Middlesborough and Hull have had 7. Man United and Swansea have had 2.

Overall, Man City and Liverpool are 8 points better off, Watford are on 7. We are worst off with -13 followed by Swansea on -12.

If all results for the remainder of the season were matched, we would finish 12th on 49 points.

Really interesting to see the stats of other clubs. Liverpool looked primed for an upturn following last year. Watford surprise me though.

Also interesting that Leicester aren't that far behind their own results of last year. You'd think they'd be the major losers for this year. Given how well they're doing in the CL too they might start to climb the league over the winter.

Can I offer a slight variation:

Goals Scored:

1: Chelsea (a) 1 (Collins) ....................last year 2 (Carroll, Lanzini)......................net -1
2. Bournemouth (h) 1 (Antonio)..........last year 3 (Kouyate, Maiga Noble (p)).....net -2 (Cumulative -3)
3. Man City (a) 1 (Antonio).................,last year 2 (Moses, Sakho).......................net -1 (Cumulative -4)
4. Watford (h) 2 ( Antonio 2)...............last year 3 (Carroll, Noble 2).....................net -1 (Cumulative - 5)
5. WBA (a) 2 (Antonio, Lanzini ).........last year 3 (Kouyate, Noble 2)...................net -1 (Cumulative -6)
6, Southampton (h) 0..........................last year 2 (Antonio, Carroll)......................net -2 (Cumulative -8)
7. Middlesbrough (h) 1 (Payet)............last year 2 (Kouyate, Sakho).....................net -1 (Cumulative -9)
8. C Palace (a) 1 (Lanzini)...................last year 3 (Jenkinson, Lanzini, Payet)......net -2 (Cumulative -11)
9. Sunderland (h) 1 (Reid)...................last year 1 (Antonio)...................................=.........(Cumulative -11)
10. Everton (a) 0................................. last year 3 (Antonio, Payet, Sakho)...........net -3 (Cumulative -14)

We're 14 goals down in ten games, and we're down against virtually every opponent.

The CF's managed 7 in 10 (Carroll 3, Sakho 3, Maiga 1) last year. This season it's zero.
The CMs managed 8 in 10 (Noble 5, Kouyate 3). This season it's zero.

Antonio, Lanzini and Payet have matched last year's goal tally from AM/wide.

The only area that has improved in the goals scored column is defence. They are +1.

Goals Conceded:

1: Chelsea (a) 2..............last year 2 .......................=.... (Cumulative =)
2. Bournemouth (h) 1 ....last year 4 .....................net -3 (Cumulative -3)
3. Man City (a) 3............,last year 2 '....................net +1 (Cumulative -2)
4. Watford (h) 4..............last year 1.....................net +3 (Cumulative +1)
5. WBA (a) 4 ..................last year 0 ...................net +4 (Cumulative +5)
6, Southampton (h) 3......last year 1 .....................net +2 (Cumulative +7)
7. Middlesbrough (h) 1 ...last year 2 .....................net -1 (Cumulative +8)
8. C Palace (a) 0 ............last year 1 .....................net -1 (Cumulative +7)
9. Sunderland (h) 0 ........last year 0 ........................=.....(Cumulative +7)
10. Everton (a) 2............ last year 2.........................=.... (Cumulative +7)

Realistically, there was a three game (if that) brain fart , but otherwise we are largely defending to the same, or better standard than last year.

Man City and Liverpool the big improvers. Ourselves regrettably the big regressors.

No real improvement from Chelsea also.
