You speak to fans of other clubs and they always seem to really rate snod. The Southampton fan I know down at the gym said fonte is helped/ always looked a lot better next to VD.

Was an interesting post on kumb pointing out maybe fonte struggles with our higher defence the the saints employed. Could be little things like that that make a player go from looking good to a liability...

Sullivan, and since that moment our results have not been the same.

He looked rock solid in Portgual's defence in the Euros

^^^ He's not now - partly to blame for the Faroe Islands just scoring against Portugal!

Defensively better but his distribution and passing is still shocking though, multiple occasions he played passes out of defence that was nearly intercepted, or the receiving playing having to play back to Hart, or a long ball to nowhere.

There's not much between our 3 centre backs in terms of distribution.

Our best ball players in central defence are probably Rice, Burke, and Oxford!

Fonte looked to be playing in a mixture of positions last night , midfield enforcer , on the right wing at one time , up with the attack and then helped with the Ayew goal - very lively player last night as were every member of the team - effort was not lacking .

One of his better games for us last night, looks much more comfortable on the right of a back three.

One thing I've noticed about Fonte is, something you're taught when you're playing football is when receiving the ball (not under pressure) from your weak side, to let the ball come across your body onto your strong side before moving the ball or dribbling forward....

Fonte never does this, he always stops the ball dead or passes it back where it's come from. Could be a confidence thing, and last night I appreciate the weather conditions would've made the pitch slick but watch him closer now, it really hampers him.

Thought he looked great last night in that 3 at the back and supporting Zab, really hoping that is how we set up in future games, although I am worried with a better LW in the opo's team we'll be vunerable

I've been impressed with Fonte recently. He definately deserves to keep his place in the team over Ogbonna at the moment.

I'm beginning to think Ogbonna was a bit of a one season wonder...

No idea at all why we extended his contract in the summer. Fonte is perhaps better as part of a back three but he deserves to be kept in the team at the moment.

I thought precisely the same over Mark Noble two seasons ago.
What possessed the club to give him a 5 year deal in 2015 ? Complete lunacy

Fonte is nowhere near as bad as some people on here make him out to be. He is a top class defender who has played at a much higher intentional level than any of our other defenders. Aside from Reid he should be the first defender on the team sheet.

In the Palace game - think Cabaye went down the back of his achilles with his studs. Went off and Rice came on for him.
