Rice is more likely to play, which may turn out to be a good thing. Burke or Oxford need to return though, we're short in an area we can't afford to be short in.

I'd put a bid in for Ryan Shawcross this January , his contract is up at the end of the season - ok he's 30 now but he's still a good solid centre half - 3 year deal should seal it .

If Fonte and Collins are finished in the summer that would be an option worth looking at I suppose, I don't want loads of over thirties blocking the likes of Rice, Burke and Oxford though.

Time for Oxford and Burke to be brought back and for Slav to do some defensive coaching

Fonte's age and West Ham's bucket and sponge medical team made it inevitable that he'd pick up a long term injury with us (something he's never had before)

If the club isn't working on bringing back the two Reeces, I'd like to know why, because, not only is Fonte injured long term, Collins, Ogbonna and Reid will miss half a dozen matches each before the seson ends

And signing a short term crock like Shawcross is a ridiculous waste of resources

Having squad depth and back up players is overated anyway...

The central defender's departure from the English Premier League club follows co-owner David Sullivan's decision to insult Fonte and Scotland international Robert Snodgrass in well publicised criticism of Slaven Bilic's recruitment policy.

Sullivan cut off Bilic's recruitment budget midway through the summer transfer window before sacking the Croat coach in early November.

Seeking to insulate himself from criticism of West Ham's player trading, Sullivan had told the Guardian newspaper that: “I’m not involved in the strategy. The manager says he wants Fonte from Southampton and Snodgrass from Hull. My kids begged me not to sign them."

Fonte was understandably unimpressed by his employer's words. “It’s ignorance,” the Portuguese said the next day. “I’m not going to say anything. It’s not going to change who I am.

"It’s not going to change what I do. I’m going to keep being the good professional that I am. I am going to keep working hard to try and help my team-mates and the manager. What has been said has no effect on me or who I am.

Can't doubt the information Chalks has passed on before.

No idea at all why we extended his contract in the summer. Fonte is perhaps better as part of a back three but he deserves to be kept in the team at the moment.

Oh dear!

Such an utterly pointless signing. That’s no reflection on Fonte himself as clearly he’s a good professional but he should never have been signed.

Agreed. It sent out a poor message to the youngsters (Rice & Oxford), who it appeared weren't even considered good enough to be squad players. Rice only had his opportunity this year due to so many injuries.

All day long. Was always going to be a very expensive waste of time. At least we get some money back. Nice bloke though.

An excellent piece of recruitment and transfer business following the departure of James Tomkins

I wonder if that's who the Chinese team thought they were buying?
