Vera Lynn

Postby OnePaulHilton on Thu Mar 09, 2017 4:34 pm

Dunno if it's been mentioned already or if anyone has the clout to arrange it but any chance of getting Vera Lynn's version of Bubbles played at the next home match to celebrate her 100th Birthday.

Please delete mods if done already.

That's a banging idea as I believe she is a Hammer from East Ham, so I have been told.

Nice one JBB. We are still proud of our history and heritage and I hope the club can appreciate that. Would be a touch of nostalgic class to a woman who deserves it.! :crest:

A sort of claim to fame...

A close uncle of mine dated, danced with (Dennis Drews in Manor Park) and then got engaged to her in the 30's

I never did get the full SP from my Mum and Dad on when and why they split up. Probably her fame :-(

(P.S And on an entirely different subject, in the1950s, Bert Weedon - remember him? - moved next door to him in Ashford Road, East Ham)

God, I'm showing my age!

Remember as a kid in the 1958 promotion year, my dad took me into the old West Stand for the Liverpool game near the end of the season. Vera Lynn and Frankie Vaughan (Liverpool) were sitting together nearby. Family used to live near Vera in Forest Gate when she was a girl. She got a huge cheer when the crowd realised she was there. Game finished 1-1 iirc. The roar when we scored was hair-raising. Never heard a noise like that before or since. Lovely memories. Dad couldn't believe that the scruffy second division club he had supported for the last thirty years were about to be promoted to the first division.

I met a gentleman a few years ago who told me he had dated her back then too, his first name was Frank, he wasn't your uncle by chance.

Love this sort of thing - gets a double thumbs up from me...

Not sure if it's my age but I find I get terribly choked up when we have a minutes applause. The little girl whose image came up against Chelsea last game I think

the one thing they could do at the OS to improve on the boleyn would be to drop the awful honky tonk version of bubbles and play the full vera lynn version on matchdays.

Born in East Ham, brought up in Barking. I think she still lived in Barking even after the war.

Great idea. Have to admit it's my favorite version.

I am sure I can recall as a very young kid my parents having an Bert Weedon record. Did he play the guitar? I have a vision of a bloke with a guitar on the cover. Don't know if it was a 33 or 78

As for Vera, what a fabulous idea and I am glad the club are interested. Well done everyone.
