hopefully one day we will be able to do what arsenal do play our kids in early cup matches getting them ready for the step up.

I reckon quinna fernandez martinez rice oxford burke cullen holland will do well this season.

dont know anything about saed hak---------------- but comes with a good reputation.

we shall see.

all replacements for the likes of collins fonte noble snodgrass in the next year or so.

The future is bright but its the here and now that we all worry about.
What I like which the Club often get criticised about, is not having any kind of 'plan'. Yet I'm seeing a real concerted effort signing highly regarded young attacking midfielders. A philosophy to encourage as much creative talent as we can in recent times where we produce a conveyor belt of attacking goalscoring lads that will in time bolster the squad with that little special touch. Sure, not every single one will come off but the idea is sound and they're clearly prepared to spend relative big on these youth talents to do it and even be patient depending on which ones come in. Most of them have a similar profile and won't stop in their search for another up and coming talent. Its not something we've really done as a Club on this scale before.

Lanzini - 22 - loan to begin with option to buy £9m
Samuelsen - 19 - comes from Man City
Fernandes - 20 - £5.5m from Soon
Quina - 16 - Comes via Chelsea
Martinez - 19 - £2.5m from Valencia
Holland - 18 - Comes via Everton
Anouar El Mhassani - 16 - Signed from Ajax
Haskabanovic - 18 - £2.7m

£19.7m shows real ambition to try getting some of the best kids around looking for the long term.

It's a policy to be applauded.
Agree with CNR add into that Byram, Masuaku, Fletcher (who we made 5 million on) and our own Josh Cullen, Reece Burke, Reece Oxford, Declan Rice our academy is starting to take shape again.

A cup win and a promotion over the past 2 years says we're improving that's for sure.

The PL2/U23 thread --- 2017/2018

Postby bubbles1966 on Fri Aug 11, 2017 5:19 pm

Season opener tonight v Everton.

Haksabanovic and Antonio to play.

Not only are we back in the top flight for the youth team but we are also in some international cup group with Spurs, Villareal and Benfica.

Much better standard of competition for the youngsters this year.

Shame they don't televise the PL2 fixtures. I'd happily pay a small yearly fee to WHUFC.com if they could show them all

So, Martinez starts for the U23's tonight, clear sign that he probably won't be involved in the squad for Sunday ? Yet he played a big part in pre season, I don't understand Slav sometimes

What is there to not understand?
Martinez only played pre-season because we didnt have a lot of choices up front.

At the beginning of pre season the options were him or Fletcher, then for the last couple it was him or Hernandez, so I don't really see what extra options have suddenly become available to us which means he goes back to the U-23's. I was just hoping this season might've been a bit of a breakthrough for the lad.

Seems odd we will have no striker option on bench or is sakho ready for the bench?

DG tweeted that he hopes Sakho will travel tomorrow. If not personally I'd take Jahmal Hector-Ingram considering he only played roughly around 10 minutes for the U23s last night and had a great season in 16/17.

Did anyone see the U21 match last night? Just wondering how the new lad Sead Haksabanovic got on. The commentary on the OS made it seem like he played well.

Premier League International Cup dates confirmed

A date has been confirmed for West Ham United U23s’ Premier League International Cup tie against Portuguese outfit Benfica.

The Hammers will take on The Reds, who just missed out on qualification to the knockout rounds of last season’s competition, on 21 November 2017, though a venue and kick-off time is yet to be confirmed.

The tournament was won by Porto last season after a 5-0 final win over Sunderland in the north east.

The Hammers’ campaign in the International Cup kicks-off at the end of this month, with a second trip to Tottenham Hotspur in the space of two weeks taking place on 31 August.

Then, Terry Westley’s team will host Villarreal – a date that has also been changed – just five days later on 4 October at Dagenham and Redbridge’s Chigwell Construction Stadium.

Will be a good experience for them. Here's hoping a few youngsters will be involved v Cheltenham too.

Assume this is the best thread for PL2 discussion??

The under 23 beat Tottenham Hotspur on Monday having come back from 2-0 down to win 3-2. Centre-back Josh Pask volleyed home the winner. dg

Anyone go to watch?
