Ajax Player Abdelhak Nouri (non WHU)

Postby sanchoz on Thu Jul 13, 2017 2:04 pm

Don't know how closely people have been following this story but during a preseason game between Ajax and Werder Bremen this past Saturday (8th), an Ajax player called Abdelhak Nouri collapsed and needed immediate emergency treatment. The news today is that he has suffered "serious and permanent brain damage"

Ajax midfielder Abdelhak Nouri suffered "serious and permanent brain damage" after collapsing in a friendly match on Saturday.

The 20-year-old had "cardiac arrhythmias" - heart rhythm problems - during the game against Werder Bremen.

The club statement said the chances of recovery from the damage is nil.

It added: "The diagnosis was made that a lot of [his] brain is not functioning. All this probably occurred due to a lack of oxygen supply."

On Monday, the club had said tests showed his "heart is functioning normally" and brain scans did not detect "any anomalies" - but new tests revealed the extent of the damage.

The Amsterdam-born player was flown by helicopter to hospital in Austria - where the abandoned friendly match was being played.

Ajax say he will soon be transferred to a hospital in Amsterdam for further care.

Former Manchester United and Fulham goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, now CEO at Ajax, said: "This is the worst possible message. It is terrible. We feel enormously for his parents, siblings and other relatives.

"The blow is also difficult for Ajax, though we knew we had to consider this scenario. They were uncertain days, lots of people in different ways have sympathised with his situation and is greatly appreciated.

"Abdelhak is such a great talent, but unfortunately we will never know how far his star would have reached had this not happened. "

Nouri played 15 league and cup games for Ajax in 2016-17, scoring one goal in a Dutch Cup tie.

Ajax statement (translated):

Serious brain damage Nouri

Ajax received very bad news on the condition of Abdelhak Nouri on Thursday. Ajax suffered severe and permanent brain damage.

On the intensive care of the hospital in Innsbruck, Nouri's brain functions have been investigated in recent days. The diagnosis that was subsequently made is that a large part of his brain no longer functions and that the chance of recovery of these crucial brain functions is nil. All of this
Most likely due to insufficient oxygen supply to the brain after the midfielder became unwell during the match Ajax - Werder Bremen in Hippach. He is medically released for transportation. The expectation is that Nouri will be taken to a hospital in Amsterdam for a short period of time for further care.

As reported earlier this week, Ajax communicates on behalf of the Nouri family. They let them know that they still have hope and ask them not to stop the prayers.

Real Ajacied
The Nouri born in Amsterdam on April 2, 1997, went through the entire Ajax youth training program. On September 21, 2016, the midfielder made his debut in the first half, during the cup match against Willem II. In total, he entered into fifteen official matches, making it one goal. For the young Ajax, the Amsterdammer came 45 times, for that team he scored eleven times. Last season, the great talent of Ajax received the Golden Bull, the award for the best player of the Jupiler League.

General Director Edwin van der Sar: "This is the worst conceivable message. It's terrible. We feel immense with his parents, his brothers and sisters and his other neighbors. For them, this suffering can not be described. The hit has also arrived at Ajax, even though we knew we had to keep this scenario in mind. It was uncertain days, where a lot of people lived in different ways in their situation. That is greatly appreciated. I also noticed that the whole club has been working on it since Saturday. Abdelhak is such a great talent, but unfortunately we will never know how far his star would have gone if this had not happened. "

Enormously sad news. Whole career ahead of him. I believe this was expected to be a breakthrough season for him as well.

Terrible. I don't even care about the obvious talent he had, there is more to life than football.

Poor lad indeed. With Klaasen gone he would've had more chances this season and could've gone on to great things. Now... I feel for his family. How do you deal with this? Heartbreaking for any parents to see their son like this.

not a problem..really gutted for his family and his friends..ajax and former ajax players/managers (like jaap stam, frank de boer, davy klaassen, ricardo kishna etc.) all remember him fondly so it felt only right to share this video

Terrible news. We seem to be getting a few of these each season despite the clubs putting new screening methods in place.
